  1. Since we know what to do to get the response of the $20 HiVi right, seems to that the primary question will be does this unit provide the dispersion of the originals. Otherwise, not much reason to spend the extra money for it.
  2. The Simply Speakers tweeter is not the same unit. And if I don't actually happen to need a tweeter, $85 is a fair amount just to find out whether this might be good someday.
  3. If we can get 9 people to chip in $10 each, we could get one and send it to Roy for testing. If we make it an all-out effort culminating in eventual dissection, there won't be any arguments about who gets to keep it.
  4. I think the woofer in the 303 had a butyl rubber surround. I wonder where one of those might be found, or if they've gone the way of everything else AR OEM.
  5. This is my current favorite for wax: http://www.daddyvans.com/allabournafu.html Mix of carnauba, beeswax and olive oil. No scent, or you can get it with orange or lavender. No VOCs, silicones, etc. Food safe (not that you're going to eat off your speakers, but it's good on cutting boards, which should never have any kind of spirits used on them).
  6. I didn't say it would be attractive, just cheap. You were most fortunate that your vinyl peeled off easily. Most of the time, the stuff has to be either removed with stripper or sanded off, and if you go with sanding, by the time you're done you'll probably end up spending as much on sandpaper as on stripper. And if you paint over the vinyl, either the paint won't stick or the vinyl will start peeling after you paint it. You don't really have to do much with MDF at all. Just sand them a bit and put some paste wax on it. http://sdrdesign.com/PBbrick1.JPG
  7. Last time I looked, you can buy enough remover to strip a pair of speakers for about $10. That's probably cheaper than the paint will be. But if you're looking for something super cheap, head on down to your nearest fabric store, get some sheer black spandex and just wrap the whole box, stapling the fabric around the back. You won't even need a grill. About $5 a yard, which should be enough for a pair of speakers that size.
  8. I would not try to paint vinyl, or use a latex paint. The spray they sell to remove striping from cars should make the vinyl peel right off. Then you can fill the mdf with any non water based filler or bondo, seal it with sanding sealer and then shoot the finish. If you want to use something water based, use something that dries hard, like car paint. Don't use house paint!
  9. I would just make new linen grills and put on a classic AR badge. As for the finish, might be a good project to try "soft black" on. I have a pair of empty AR-11 cabinets with damaged front edges in my closet. I'm thinking of retro-remodeling into AR-3a boxes, but that'll be a bigger project because I'll need to cut the damage away and grind the front faces flat before milling and attaching new face frames.
  10. How are you wiring these together? Series, parallel, some combination of both?
  11. Maybe a hook to outsourcing, offshoring and the decline of "Made in the USA" by workers with full time jobs and benefits? AR was unusually progressive in this area for a company of its size and time.
  12. It might be a good idea to come up with a proposed outline to give prospective funders an overview of what they'd be underwriting. And you could probably pull together some of your many past forum posts on AR history into a "sample chapter" as well.
  13. Tom, is this going to be technology and products, or "behind the scenes" company org and persons? I'd personally prefer the latter, although the fact that most of the principals are no longer with us would obviously be a hindrance.

    AR-91

Wasn't the entire 9 series designed to be floor speakers? I wonder how the listening would have gone if they hadn't been up on the shelf.
  15. A hot melt glue gun is your best friend here.

  17. Frank,

I deleted your holiday music post because the link is dead. Try again?

Dear Gene, how big of a file and what kind can I post?

I'm having difficulty uploading MP4 files.

      Please advise, thank you.

I don't think there is a limit to the size of a file, but the smaller it is the quicker it uploads and the less chance of a glitch. How big are the files you're trying to upload?

  18. You can't get a clean cut on foam using regular blades. Straight cuts on foam are done with heated blades or wires. Any shop that sells cut-to-size foam cushions should be able to make the cuts for you (whether they'll be willing to do the cuts on foam you haven't bought from them is another matter).
  19. If you buy 5/4 S2S, the actual thickness will be planed flat to about 1 1/16". Be sure you specify S2S; if you just buy 5/4 you'll get a piece rough cut to 1 1/4" thickness with surfaces that are not planed to parallel flatness.
  20. We admins only manage the forums. The site owner is the only person who can do any changes to the library. But there's no reason you couldn't post an index file here. Just make sure it's a txt or PDF file, or if you want to post links put them in the body of the post. If you do a file attach with an html file the forum software will treat it like a txt file.
  21. The AR-4 series (which should probably include the 6 as well) has a sound that is very much in line with the larger models. The lows don't go as low, the highs don't go as high and the soundstage is narrower because the tweeters lack the wide dispersion of the domes, but the voicing and "accuracy" don't stick out like sore thumbs. By comparison, the sound of the AR-8 was like hitting your thumb with a sledge hammer. Roy was probably glad he got out the door before anyone could pin that one on him.
  22. Links to outside ads expire when their listings do. If you spot an ad somewhere that you think others will find interesting, the best thing to do is copy the ad text into a new post and then include the photos in your post.
  23. I sometimes wonder how many audio owners have ever actually been to a live acoustic instrument performance.
  24. Luigi, I remember comparing AR-3 and 3a new, and the difference was as you described, but rather subtle. If you find the difference more pronounced, then deterioration in components is a distinct possibility, and the 3 has had more years to deteriorate than the 3a.
