  1. Here is a photo of the AR Demonstration Room in Grand Central Station in New York around 1970. It was there for years with various AR speakers and electronics and the turntable. It was only for demonstrations, not for sales. It was permanent for a few years in the late 1960s/early 1970s. Does anyone remember this? (This was a frame from a youtube video at 2:33 by Trainluvr called 1969 plan photos about NYC.)
  2. I have all the drivers and components needed to finish a pair of AR3 speakers if anyone has a pair of empty cabinets or speakers for parts thanks
  3. >I also recall having read the same detailed information from Stereophile, and I assume its correctness against what appears to be a sort of revisionist article containing conflated timelines, unattributed premises and boot-strapped conclusions. >I've been wishing & hoping for Tom Tyson's definitive AR history for years...would a GoFundMe effort be in vain? —ar_pro Book: The History of Acoustic Research Any and all suggestions and ideas here would be greatly appreciated! Any thoughts about what you would like to see would be great as well. To do a complete history wo
  4. Hello Friend of Acoustic Research: A documentary filmmaker from New York -- living in the same town as and acquainted with Edgar Villchur -- is making a documentary film on the life of Edgar Villchur. This film producer is Cambiz Khosravi, a well-known documentary producer, and he is well on the way with his project, "Edgar Villchur: The American Inventor." I've helped him quite a bit, and I think the documentary production will be very nice and a great tribute to Edgar Villchur and Acoustic Research. Mr. Khosravi does need any help he can get to cover the cost of the "production stage
  5. Need 3/4" dome for AR 2ax... Thanks!
  6. Quite an "interesting" opinion by someone called Herb Reichert as part of a review of the Harbeth Monitor 30.2 40th Anniversary Edition loudspeaker over at Stereophile. https://www.stereophile.com/content/harbeth-monitor-302-40th-anniversary-edition-loudspeaker "Everything sounds like what it's made of. I'm known for saying that, and to me, it's obvious: box speakers with dome tweeters sound like box speakers with dome tweeters. I can hear their tweeters calling to me when I'm in the next room, making a phone call. I can hear their boxes hissing and groaning even after I turn of
  7. My first speaker rehab is a pair of AR-5's. I'm on the woofers which I have determined have bad voice coils. Is it reasonable to think this can be repaired or am I at a point where the woofers need replacement? Thanks for your help!
  8. I recently acquired a pair of KLH model 28's. I know they are rare, but are they collectible? They are too much speaker for me, so I'll probably be selling them. Man can they part your hair. I'm just trying to figure out what I got. Thank you for any help. DJ BTW I have AR-5, AR-2ax, AR-4ax, and KLH 17's. I like them all.
  9. This wonderful Christmas poem was sent to me several years ago by a great AR friend (who reports here frequently): T'was the night before Christmas And all through the room, 3a's were playing, Their bass tight with no boom. As Nat sang "Chestnuts..." He sounded so near, Those dome drivers Were playing so clear. From high notes to low notes It sounded so good The melody came through Just as it should Now Santa loves music, And his gifts are so right, "AR speakers for all And to all, a
  10. I just happened to be in the right place last Thursday and caught a pair of AR 4xa speakers in a moving sale. Once I confirmed they were actually AR 4xa speakers I took the chance and grabbed them untested for 20.00. They are in rough shape and will be a a restoration project for sure. Took them home and did the battery test 1.5 volt to see if we had any action which I did. So hooked them up as the were and to my surprise they worked perfectly. Amazing AR sound. Being the newbie here I now have a lot of questions. 1. Someone has gone and painted them with what looks like flat bl
  11. Hello All, My Name is Sudhir and I write from India. I am very happy to have found this forum of great know how and people with expert knowledge of these wonderful speakers. I have owned a few AR's in India. These are quite a rarity in this country and I have been relentlessly searching to get my hands on more of these speakers. I have a AR18J, the TSW210 and the TSW510 (Dads). Of all these the AR18's are my favorite. I bought them from a guy 15 years ago for some 15$. At that point one of the speaker was not working . A quick inspection revealed that one of the lugs had come of
  12. Hi all, This is my first post in this forum,'ve been reading some post...Congratulations for the contributions!! Two years ago bought a pair of AR 2a in very nice status, but I never have heard them well (musical fidelity a100, marantz 1150, NAD 352...)...could you recommend some that work well with it? thx in advance Diego
  13. I have a set in excellent condition with the controller and cables. I am the original owner and they come with the original boxes as well. I would like 500$ for them. They are located in Portland Oregon. They still sound amazing.
  14. hello classic speaker gurus! this is my 1st post, though i've been a member for a while. i am taking a look at my AR 5 crossovers to see if they need updating. i did some research and found carl's schematic (attached), another schematic (looked the same), and some pictures. so i was surprised when i opened up the box and found this: http://albums.phanfare.com/isolated/Dk50KRQL/1/6272416 i expected 3 capacitors: 4uF, 24 uF and 72 uF. instead i only found one object i immediately recognized as a capacitor (i am a novice at this). it is the 4uF cap. so where are the 24 and 72 uF caps? ther
  15. Hello All, I would firstly like to thank the members for helping me out with my AR18 rebuild in my previous thread. Now, for my 4th pair of ARs, I have come across a reasonably decent shape AR93EQ with blown tweeters. Now the other 18s which I bought for the woofers have the tweeters lying around. So from a little research I have concluded that the tweeters on the 18 and 93 use the same tweeter. So, it should be a straight fit. I am really interested in the 93s cause I know they will have pretty much the same characteristics of the 18 with additional lower frequency response.
  16. C. Victor Campos C. Victor Campos, 84, from Framingham, Massachusetts, an alumnus of Acoustic Research from 1960 until 1963 and again from 1974 until 1979, died on December 11, 2017 after an extended illness. Victor briefly worked at AR's Music Room in New York in 1959 and later worked in customer services and assisted Ed Villchur with the production of the Live-vs.-Recorded series in the early 1960s. In 1963, Victor went to competitor KLH Research and Development Corporation to work in customer service and engineering under Henry Kloss, but he returned to AR in 1974 working with t
  17. You can make an offer on this pair AR 1MS speakers since I prefer selling to the classic speaker forum members They are also listed on eBay: item number 302360543351. So you can go there for more details. I can consider offers until there is actual bidding on them. Thanks George
  18. It looks like an AR-2ax, and the badges attached to it identify it as such, but the tweeters have rear connectors and they are more flush mounted than any/most of the pictures of AR-2ax I've seen. Is this a late or early or radically modified AR-2ax or some other speaker?
  19. Hi, I am selling my AR-LST-2 that I inherited from my audiophile father in law. The ARs are in great condition, no rip, no tear. I am not sure if my current asking price is too high or too low. Can someone let me know a reasonable price for them? I have other high end stuff that I need to research like a pair of symmetry subwoofers (shown below), and a pair of tall, rectangular speakers that are as thin as a sheet of plywood (not show). Thanks in advance
  20. I know this is an AR forum, but quickly, does anyone know anything about the Scott 348 Receivers from 1965? Decent? Will it drive AR 2s? I love the wood, and it looks great next to AR speakers.
  21. Hi all. I have a chance to get a pair of AR4x in good shape for $200 or a pair of KLH model 24 twenty four series II for $140, also in good shape. WE have a a small home and don't need big speakers, so both fit. Which are more durable, dependable, and of course, sound better? Any help is greatly appreciated. Best. Sean
  22. I have a set of Acoustic Research 132 (Spirit series 1989-1991) bookshelf speakers. Mine are made under the teledyne AR company before the Jensen takeover. The main problem I have is that a single 8" woofer has been replaced by an old plessey rola woofer, the second woofer is original but needs re-foaming, I was wondering if it would be very difficult to track down another woofer like the original one in the picture? or a replacement pair of similar specs. Just some info the 8" woofer was used in all AR spirit series from 132 to 162 the large floor standing speakers. I'd appreci
