  2. What would you call "fake?: These appear to be real AR-3 cabinets with real AR-3 drivers and mostly original AR-3 parts. They might be a pair of AR-3s reconstructed using parts cannibalized from other AR-3s. Considering the age of the model, this s not an unusual thing to see here in the US, and for most of us here the important consideration would be that the workmanship is good and the speakers operate properly. So they are not "fake" AR-3s. But if someone is claiming they are an all-original matching pair of AR-3s with sequential serial numbers, that's definitely fake, because there never was such a thing in the history of AR.
  3. From the condition of the white labels, if someone did change the serials, it would have to have happened quite a long time ago.
  4. You'll get better responses if you set an asking price.
  5. The 755a that was used as a "tweeter" in the AR-1 didn't have much usable response above 12kHz.
  6. Villchur's acoustic suspension patent was successfully challenged in court, which he in later years attributed to his error of not hiring a patent attorney to prepare a more ironclad application. If there's anything Villchur should have gotten a humanitarian award for choosing not to patent it was his post-AR development of multi-channel wide dynamic range compression, a technology that is found in almost every hearing aid made today.
  7. There was a square-magnet woofer used in the AR-58 and AR-9 series.
  8. Questioning peoples' opinions or methods is appropriate. Questioning personal motives is not. Stop now, or I'll kill this thread.
  9. The thread was moved to the section of the site that is for peoples' pictures of their systems. If anything, I probably waited too long to move it Feel free to complain to the site owner if you feel it is inappropriate.
  10. This topic has evolved into a system show-and-tell. Moving to "Members Pictures."
  11. We only have one guest room, so if you "all" show up, you should plan on getting very chummy with each other at night.
  12. I actually am using decidedly lo fi bits on my computers (earbuds; the desktop workstation doesn't have any speakers at all, and the laptop's are almost always muted) because they are my working tools and not part of my entertainment system. They work fine for doing edits and sync'ing subtitles, but when the time comes for any real listening, it's time to use the real audio system.
  13. I am quite certain that if someone were to show up at my home packing broadcast-quality microphones and recording equipment, my music system would fall far short of many of those who have devoted far more time, effort and money toward theirs. Thus, I have no need to "hide" anything. I'm simply pointing out that a recording made using a cell phone mic that has had some 80% of its digital content deleted due to compression and then been even further compressed by a hosting site's server, played over the tiny speakers in a laptop (which would actually be more sound than I get out of the BT earbuds I use most of the time, but YMMV) will tell you nothing about the quality of anything. And comparing that recording to other recordings made on completely different equipment will tell you nothing about the relative quality of any of the original sound sources. And I would venture that the lack of response to calls for vids reflects that the majority of people here find the idea as goofy as I do. If anyone wants to know what my sound system really sounds like, hop a plane to Portland, OR and have a listen. I'll even feed you and put you up for your stay.
  14. In my case, what it says is that I think it would be a waste of my time posting a vid that will tell people how good my mic and their speakers are.
  15. Your best bet is to pull one of the woofers and look for a 6-8 digit manufacturer/date code on the basket. Assuming that you have original woofers.
  16. XAM was the audio "house brand" of the EJ Korvette department store chain. Korvette was a NY-based company that operated in the Northeastern states, and was an early challenger of "fair trade" anti-discounting laws. The speakers were really nothing to write home about, but some of the electronics were made by Harman Kardon and Roland.
  17. Eight tweeter rebuilds is a big chuck of change. HiVi might be something to consider, at least as a stopgap while saving up the pennies for proper rebuilds of the originals. And to keep the speakers usable while the rebuilds are being done. The upside of doing it in LSTs is that dispersion of any individual tweeter should be less of a concern than in a box.
  18. If you have no experience, a pair of AR-3s is a bad place to start out. Considering that they were essentially "free," if you don't intend to keep them your best bet is probably to sell them as-is.
  19. Reduce image size to 640x480 or smaller at 72 dpi and save as jpg with quality set at 30%. You'll get a file size 100 kb or smaller. You can view your attachments in "My Attachments" (just under the link to edit your profile). Click on the post an attachment is uploaded to, download and edit the attachment to reduce file size, add the smaller file to the post and then delete the larger file.
  20. Electric staple guns start at around $30 at Home Depot. You could also take it to an art/framing shop and have them stretch and staple it like a canvas.
  21. Velcro and a staple gun. That's what the later classic era models used.
  22. Postal zone 41, definitely pre-63.
  23. First time I ever saw one of these was in a Marantz-branded speaker in the early 70s.
  24. The solvents in nitrocellulose lacquer are the same ingredients used in many paint strippers. You definitely want to seal wood that you've stained, especially if you used a pigmented stain.
  25. A level control would probably be a good idea. How are you determining frequencies? Are you measuring, or just doing it by ear?
