AR-3's needing TLC

Score on those pots. They're the same ones I have in my 3a's now. Heavy brass wipers with coil springs instead of the combo spring/wipers of the later models that tend to disintegrate over time.

how do I take the wire off the post? does it just pop out easy?

They're spring terminals. Push down the plunger on top.

ok they are off. thanks.

things are coming together now.

I saw on the back of the mids the dates from 66.

I am going to need to take my time putting this back together, I need to start putting the cross over together. now might be a good time to work on the box while its lighter atm with the woofer and tweet out of it. Hmm. the part that has me worried is I have to rebuild some corners and I need to harvest some Veneer I can use to fill in the missing pieces

DSCN1549.thumb.JPG.fa52992f628fee70f577d4b5c0ba6277.JPG

here you can see the corner, the slightly parted seam and a chipped spot farther down

DSCN1550.thumb.JPG.3b4d1995ad6784090bbaf8c8d21ea805.JPG

this would be the worst corner. between both speakers 4 rear corners need to be rebuilt and 2 more need a light rebuild.

Or I can just park on this set of cabs and keep eye out for a decent pair of cabs to come along. they should sound the same regardless

busy day today, picked up some caps from planet surplus, harvested some veneer, for the front terminals I had to solder a lug terminal inside so I later can install a new wire that wasn't included with the speakers. then I cleaned and polished the pots. the pots turned out really good. pics!

surplus caps (good for now hopefully) 6 uf and 24 uf

let me tell ya this wasn't by any means easy to do. but in the end it looks good.

DSCN1726.thumb.JPG.0af32406e9449840a9b43fa3cbf9d3e9.JPG

careful viewing these, they are shiny

DSCN1731.thumb.JPG.31a1ab2be1ceffad0f6d6b05661ce8f4.JPG

one set was in very good condition basically no corrosion, the other has light corrosion and cleaned up good with just one pot that needed more work than the others

now I'm turning my full attention to the cabs, first I need to strip the finish off so I can start repairs.

The pots look great. I am glad you are taking the time, expense, and effort to make these sing again. I have a pair here that I completely refinished and need to sell as I have LST's that I am doing next that will be my keepers......but.....every time I play these 3's I can't sell them....lol. I have been thru six or seven pair and these sound the best of all of them. Just has that right thing about them...hard to describe but it's there in the sound. Good luck in your quest.....:)

Ok every one I been very busy last few days working on the cabs, I didn't want to post till after I got oil on the cabs to see how they turned out first. (and fix any mistakes before you get to see them) So anyhoo let me tell you that was a lot of work just on the one more damaged cab. the other cab needed comparatively minor repair. when finished these cabs will look great. atm I have oil on the one cab and the other is just finishing the touch ups may get to it tonight.

the first cab required heavy sanding and corner repairs and veneer replacement in a couple other places also (small spots) the front facing on the left side had seen damage and dents up and down the edge. for supplies I used watco natural, cherry.  mostly natural and the cherry on the veneer patches to match. for filling the crunched corners I used Dap plastic wood filler. for the finishing filler I used Timbermate walnut. that works very well. blends in very well. ok pics for the people

DSCN1733.thumb.JPG.3b2457bb4dee3e86c230326aee4c045d.JPGDSCN1735.thumb.JPG.4f81282cd7b1b837f86d3d0091b92c34.JPGDSCN1742.thumb.JPG.a01d5b7ae839a12197c06111bc778e04.JPGDSCN1751.thumb.JPG.70bab357384ace030ad87ccde03fa000.JPGDSCN1755.thumb.JPG.46867f3d4be5fd5232c02ed2512f0449.JPG

you can also see on the seams have parted that I had to fill in on the top right edge a couple pics up. it turned out ok after filler was pressed in

last pic was a corner I had to rebuild with plastic filler

here is the crushed corner that required major surgery.

smashed corner with veneer bulging out

DSCN1746.thumb.JPG.3b5fd55e8823f6c033c682015c488c5a.JPG

here you can see I used a hand saw to cut a deep groove under the veneer to hollow it out then filled with glue to be pressed back into shape.

DSCN1756.thumb.JPG.a0295a09a21615e8c027515ea8772c46.JPG

here you can see how much I had to rebuild with the plastic wood filler. kind of hap hazard I have no method or experience per say I'm just winging it.

DSCN1763.thumb.JPG.c23b1d5bef723b39503c0ce038444b6c.JPGDSCN1766.thumb.JPG.96a312763fdc43b7f22c641da6b89937.JPGDSCN1779.thumb.JPG.e5d07d1121502046aa4d2e974a5a17a3.JPG

If I could have matched it better I would have. not to say someday I could take it out and redo it with better matching stuff. what the pics don't show was all the f-ing around i had to do just to get it right. redoing cuts of veneer because a edge broke off or a wrong angle cut or i had to trim some filler off because i added too much. in the end I'll be using cherry to match the redder walnut.

I could have taken more pics of every corner and piece of veneer I grafted in but all 4 rear corners had to be rebuilt many with significant veneer replacement and corner rebuilding.

on the the front. at this point I would like to say a thing about wet rags and irons. wow! first time after reading about it in the forums in several places, I started out on scratches and dents and then went nuts and ironed the entire speaker. some scratches were lifted others not a bit, most dents were lifted and I was surprised to find it even lifts on the front facing edge that had some runs and dents that I thought would never be repaired yet now you would never know how dinged up that one side was. happy face!!

DSCN1739.thumb.JPG.515d434c758143f95ac8dd1275019867.JPG

this was not lifted but a good sized dent on the front left facing edge

DSCN1781.thumb.JPG.2c6e3f463736ccd8c2dcb4d00c9f084c.JPG

and after filling and watco natural from a short distance you dont even know its there.DSCN1764.thumb.JPG.008af9624b2c98af4ef88f9f86fa532f.JPG

I rubbed the form with a pencil onto paper that I cut with a strait edge and razer blade knife

all done on both speakers.

i'm at the point to reinstall the drivers, time to clean the tweeter binding pots, there is the paint to get off then clean the posts and re-solder the wires in.

any general advice and things I should know here for this part?

As I posted on your other thread, they are coming along nicely. I bet they will sound terrific! I didn't see any close up pics of your mids. If they seem reticent, there's a good chance they need help. The original white flexible sealer at the dome base petrified and the dome cannot move as it should. Roy rebuilt mine, and they sound excellent!

Re-glueing with Aileen's

DSCN1823.thumb.JPG.b7d697e79c11f022beb0dd9d6585e96c.JPG

started with the loose side . after it dried I popped loose the other side ( that seemed like it had a good seal but when I popped it off I found some open spots) and re-glued that side also

Now that's something I hadn't considered when attempting to tighten up some
of my systems- that apparently sealed drivers might not be. I guess I'm going
to be regluing a few woofers in the coming days :-)

I had a idea about using self tapping screws to permently fix the issue. but I wouldn't to it on a ar-3 woofer but the other sizes I would. maybe use about 15 screws. just a idea. maybe its a bad idea who knows

  • 1 month later...

Here is where I am Currently after everything got finished, I'm playing Pink Floyd Dark Side of the Moon while I'm posting this. It has been several days since I got the Mids and Tweeters back from RoyC who rebuilt them. I took several days playing in the system and there is one word I can say that say that describes the sound, effortless, like nothing is being held back from me, I'm getting Pure Ar goodness blasted at me, When I'm in another room the sub bass feels like a truck going by, You feel the bass. the parts Roy refurbished sound open and coherent, I know time went by but the difference is noticeable. The materials that AR used to hold the domes in place has a shelf life and conditions the speakers are in vary but the sad truth is every mid and tweeter needs a refurbish, all that based on this one experience but the stuff ages and falls out of compliance.

I love how these sound, David's guitar work sounds so sublime and his toning and decay just fills the room.  OK here is how I finished up

DSCN1853.thumb.JPG.ce70c03d5deb41e7c2490e7d7b0668fc.JPGtime to clean up the front

DSCN1855.thumb.JPG.9764ddc6545a1e52124a0b74ce65375d.JPG

after this I filed the cab with New Insulation from Lowes and weight it with a digital fish scale, filling a garbage bag to 29 oz.

DSCN1856.thumb.JPG.d1198ca49701eb4a692e696902e692f6.JPG

you can see the tinned copper leads Roy uses plus how cleaned up the mid's screen got, looks presentable and I enjoy the naked look it has. Just a fantastic job Roy does, I'm proud of these speakers

DSCN1869.thumb.JPG.063adeef4c155d29a20ac258c44b05d6.JPG

After I finished assembly I did 2 more coats of oil and the finish looks outstanding, not showing it off here, I will later. Now its time to finally enjoy the hard labor it took to bring these up to speed.

It's purdy...... I have the 8000. It is recapped and the 3's I have will shut it down at 50 watts or so on bass heavy music.......damn 4 ohm...:) A friend is gonna drop off a Yamaha M-80 next week for me to try. It goes down to 2 ohm so will test her out....
