Snell made some fine speakers. One thing they were known for was bundling caps. This was for two reasons: (1) to reach a particular uF and (2) to attain a particular ESR (equivalent series resistance). You might find that the bundle of caps in one speaker do not match what's in the other.
They appear to fit. I'm wondering if the inner lip meets the cone edge or if it sits beyond that.
Once you get the make and m/n you may be able to find dimensions.
Killer roll if they do fit !
The leads are probably aluminum and aluminum soldering works best with a high Tin content alloy, such as Indalloy 121 (96.5Sn 3.5Ag, 221°C eutectic) or any of the "SAC alloys" (Tin-Silver-Copper or SnAgCu) like Ind256 (96.5Sn 3.0Ag 0.5Cu, 220°C).
The old glue can (depending on type) be made to release easier by dribbling a small amount of isopropanol (rubbing alcohol) on it and allowing it to 'soak' for a bit.
Getting harder to find the AR cap values used. The 6 is now a 5.7; the 8 is now an 8.2; the 30 is 31 and/or 33; and the 80 is 82.
I'll let you know if I get some and what I think. Of course it will be my opinion.
Thank you for that info. I was under the impression that the development of the 3a was pre-Teledyne. Sales years per aphenos>AR-3A: 1967-1976
What about the 2ax ?
Thanks for the reply.
Pondering a pair of AR5s nearby but would like to hold out for the 3a. There is one set not too far away but the woofers are different. One alnico and one later model.
I think my collection of ARs should include a true pair of ARs and not just Teledyne models.
