Chris1this1
I see so many people ditching their original tweeters due to low output etc. but as I've been noticing, that AR high range sound is a major part of what makes these speakers unique and amazing. First time for me to look into why the output of these larger orange dome tweeters deminish over time. A simple removal and re-suspending of the dome using new suspension foam and rubber sealant (while at it I replaced the fragile aluminum leads with standard wires) has proven to make these nice and loud again. Having never heard what these alnico orange domes sounded like before, I am thoroughly impressed with their smoothness, dispersion and articulation. djcheung
Hi Chris, Very nice ! I wish I know where to get the materials to do that myself !!!
GD70
Hi Chris! You have given us hope bringing these back! Did you take pics while you had the domes removed, and what is the orange-red foam you used? Thanks, Glenn
Chris1this1
Hi guys, I really intended to just instill hope that there is a light at the end of the tunnel for original AR dome tweeters of both styles, and not to ever discard them. The foam is proprietary to me, and following a strict gentlemans code, I try not to kiss and tell; I hope you understand.
lakecat
Quote I applaud your efforts and yes......you deserve to be compensated for your efforts. It will help to preserve these great speakers.
RoyC
Last week I had an opportunity to test one of Chris's completely rebuilt AR-3a tweeters in Larry/Vintage AR's shop, and it is excellent. In my opinion, he has pretty much nailed it. Voice coil measurements and suspension materials are virtually identical to the original tweeters...and he does a great job of re-forming the original paper dome. Reel Man
Is this a service that you perform?
GD70
I'm curious about the 2a/3 tweeter's performance compared to original as well. I've got two dead tweeters collecting dust on the shelf. Glenn
Charles218
Well I'm really impressed, this seems big to me. We've always had the ability to maintain the woofers and keep this wonderful speakers from extinction, but now it looks Chris has come up with a way to extend their life beyond what we thought was possible. Chris, can you clarify which units your repair applies to, or doesn't apply to?

I can completely rebuild the voice coil by hand, using the original type former and reinstalling the original dome on the 3/4" AR3a, LST, and their 8 ohm counterparts the LST2, AR2ax and AR5. Pictured are ther early type tweeters, I'm not currently doing the voice coil on these, but I am utilizing the suspension material and sealing rubber I've researched to re suspend the dome to get some sound back out of these. GD70
I've got a few priorities with some amp repairs, but I definitely want to send my 3 tweeters to Chris. I recently restored a set of 3as and had Chris restore the tweeters, which sounded great once the project was completed. Roy restored a set of mids for one of my set of 3's, and the mids for the earlier pair will need his attention as well. Its extremely exciting to think these 50+ year old speakers can sound virtually brand new again thanks to these two gents!
Tom Thai
Can you please share the product (where to buy) you used for repairing the tweeter: the rubber sealant? the foam surround? Thanks
Aadams
You can purchase the woofer surround sealant from RoyC. Send him a message. There is no sealant rejuvenation treatment for tweeters but is a remanufacture of the inner moving parts. Adams
