  1. Giovanni great job, these early AR10TTs deserved a correct restoration of the woofers: it must have been a struggle but the result is splendid, finally, the restoration of the crossovers respects the original project with the use of bipolar electrolytic capacitors !! The photos show a rare and splendid pair of AR10TT, no cosmetic defects, they look like new.
  2. After years of collecting AR speakers and for a long time wanting to get a pair of KLH speakers, I finally bought my pair of KLH speakers: I found a pair of Model Twenty in splendid aesthetic condition on the bay, including their original packaging boxes offered. at a good price. Unfortunately, shipping to Italy and the related taxes have almost tripled the cost of the purchase, but if they arrive intact at my home, I'll be satisfied anyway! They will be an excellent comparison with the AR2 and AR2x which I think are among the AR speakers the most similar in characteristics! These are the last photos I can insert, I can't insert the back of the speaker! I look forward to the arrival of my splendid pair of KLH Model Twenty, trusting in an atraumatic journey of speakers and packaging from the USA to Italy !!
  3. Sorry Kent, I was confused when I wrote, the suffix J distracted me ... still very beautiful and characterizing your label! A good listening and good weekend, Giorgio
  4. Jeff, I see (I'm not sure, the photo is small and not big the resolution) a custom label showing JKH, very, very well your signature on the grille of this project !!
  5. Hi Reza, from the upper photo the woofer on the left shows a masonite frame supporting the foam suspension, a cone with paper of a color close to brown (a possible different color depends on the light and the camera ...) which is compatible with the AR cones, an after market dust cover that covers the cables without showing the length; finally in the photo of the back the woofer is clearly AR, dated "out of production" for AR3a: 76 31 which makes it look like an AR10 / 11 woofer, this could be a replacement, certainly different the coil support which should be in aluminum instead of the Nomex used previously in AR3a. Probably no distinguishable difference when listening, clearly a slightly higher Fs in the AR10 / 11 woofer compared to the latest woofers for the AR3a.
  6. Hi Kent, the screws I need are the same ones used in AR4x but also the AR2ax mids (in AR4x and AR7 they are the same screws for both the tweeter and the woofer).
  7. The AR2a specimen on the left is splendid, it presents the mids with brown paper cones like mine ... these mids were made in a limited period and in a small number of specimens in 1963, which should thus position this AR2a specimen over time (if you take the photo of the back label to compare mine, I am grateful! Of my many AR pairs, the AR2a are my favorite along with the AR3a; they were cheap at the time, but they still sound magical to my ears now, they deserve a nice restoration, they will accompany you beautifully and well-sounding for the next 40 years.
  8. I confirm the use of Interlec capacitors in this period, they are also present in my AR48B crossovers, tested unlike the Elcap / Callins, the nominal values differ from the original specifications by about 20%, much less than the infamous black / red Callins !
  9. I can confirm that the woofers are not original (the label on the magnet though yes), even if these are probably Tonegen, however they are not the correct substitutes (if replacement Tonegen they would sound almost indistinguishable from the woofers built in USA and original for AR18S. If you do not find the correspondents, the most valid and easy to find replacement is always the "universal woofer", as defined by Acoustic Research 200001-1 Giorgio.
  10. For various reasons, a large part of the Cizek production of the time went overseas to Italy, perhaps about half of it! Certainly in my city, Trieste, there are three pairs of SW MG-27 ... other pairs I had identified in Italy and the other year I did not buy a perfect Model-3 and Mg-27 triptych sold for $ 1000 in Sicily ... I've given up by now, helping my friend get these newly finished MG-27s and the matching pair of Model-3s to be finished working perfectly. Unfortunately I have almost exhausted the possibility of adding photos attached to the topics: I have about 700 bytes left, about 5 last photos! I have illustrated everything I could to give as much documentation and useful information as possible, I hope to get a bonus to add more photos in the future!
  11. No good soul to part with a few screws to help me build a splendid AR7 replica ... Only the screws and the masonite panel are missing to close the hole of the tweeter contacts! .
  12. Hi, the Cizeks are not mine, I tried in vain to buy them by making an adequate offer, but nothing to do, my friend had bought them several years ago and is willing to keep them. Now they work together with a pair of AR38 on top of the AR91 and the added bass feels very good, about 20Hz more added to the already excellent bass of the Acoustic Research. A comparison with the Model1 is impossible to do, yours are fullrange speakers and the MG-27s are subwoofers, the coupling of the time put together with the MG-27 the Model-3s that have to be taken out of the cellar and tested together to the subwoofers, and this will happen in a few days, I had already done the refoaming of the 8" woofers of the Model-3, but if I remember correctly there was a tweeter that crackled, we will see in a few days if they are easily adjusted.
  13. 73 50 Is date on back label: Year 1973 Week 50 Giorgio.
  14. Finally after almost three years I have finished the first pair of AR7, they are the same ones you see at the beginning of Topic !! Yesterday the woofers received the new foam correctly glued to the outside of the cone (the previous owner had the foam glued under the cone) and returned to efficiency in their cabinets. Here is the pair of AR7 above the older AR2. My thoughts now go to Robert, ("ra.ra") to whom the photos of this beautiful couple are dedicated that he would have appreciated and certainly commented below ... as he loved to refine the 8" woofers, I left too the outer frame not painted in black.
  15. Both Cizek MG-27 subs are finished !! The four woofers are on the cabinets with new seals, the cabinets rewashed and cleaned, the grids washed, the subs are now connected to a Technics SU-V8 amp and have been playing for four hours continuously !! The 27Hz claimed by Roy Cizek all feel ... MG-27 sub is simply definitive.
  16. If you go to the "search" and type AR94 or AR 94 you should find many topics about these speakers and their brothers ... they are still excellent speakers, with excellent components. Any repairs, both of the loudspeakers, and of the crossover and cabinets, are as for the other ARs, it is important to refer to correct spare parts and / or with the same original values (especially in the capacitor values), it is difficult to find only the 2 specific woofers; I am attaching a restoration link for your AR94, good listening Giorgio. https://www.tnt-audio.com/clinica/ar94rebuild.html
  17. Pete, if you have followed what I have written and illustrated over time with photos, in my collection I have AR3a and also AR10TT, in my opinion if AR10 as per tradition AR are the "improved" version and the "best speaker produced at the time", my small contribution in perceiving the difference between AR3a and its evolution is certainly a deeper and "stronger" bass compared to the next one (but compared with the AR10TT MK2), certainly similar, in the mid-range, certainly more sensitive and efficient than the tweeter of AR10 (I usually listen to the AR3a with recommended attenuation and with the AR10TT switches mid and high respectively at -6Db and -3Db (also -6Db), the lateral dispersion between the two tweeters is very similar, I find the AR3's tweeter less " intrusive ", but certainly gives all the high harmonics useful to distinguish instruments and sounds ... intervenes in discreet help to the splendid mid. Also in the AR10 the tws work the same way, resulting a little more present ... However, the same pleasure and no effort of listening at any volume for both speakers, are only edges at the extremes of the range, pleasant AR3a, same pleasure with AR10TT. I preferred the AR10TT previously, the AR3a are more listened to these days, but having to choose, I love both equally ... maybe different moods can make me temporarily prefer one over the other!
  18. Finally the woofers have returned home with new foam (in this case I tried the "Boston fillet" foam), at the moment an MG-27 sub is ready, tonight still half an hour of work, I have to redo only the gaskets of sealed between baffle and frame, the twin will also be finished ... the cabinets still need to be cleaned better, subsequent oil finishing and finally the pair of Cizek MG-27 subs will be operational, temporarily flanked by a pair of Acoustic Research "satellites" AR38s.
  19. Genek, you're right, I checked my pair of AR1MS and they have the same number, even the pair of AR18J have the same number, not consecutive, in the afternoon I check a couple of AR18EJ labels, removed from the cabinets and check these numbers too!
  20. Your Cizeks are fine in their new room, but perhaps they would like a more "muscular" amplification, if I can guess from the photo, the power amp. is it a NAD 2200? Probably with an Adcom GFA-555 they would fly high!
  21. It is a "democratic monarchy", because it is accessible and usable to all of us fans, thanks Mark !!
  22. From what I have read and archived over the years, of the old Teledyne "production", the first ARs to have serial numbers were the AR7s, sold in pairs in a single package, of these I have three pairs, two produced in Holland, one in England and all have serial numbers (a fourth pair will be the "replica" that I will set up in the NOS cabinet, of which I own two pairs, with original speakers conforming to the model), also of the AR7, I have two original packaging of which I am attaching a photo (note the one at right in photo yet to be opened!). Instead of the ADD series, I own a pair of AR18Js with serial numbers, a pair of AR18EJs (made in England), also serial and finally a pair of AR17EH (made in England) also serial ... all these pairs were sold as the previous AR7s in a single package, therefore in ° they were serial. Finally I have a pair of AR1MS, the smallest loudspeakers produced by AR, also sold in pairs, in a single common package and with serial numbers. This is my contribution.
  23. I also removed the old and out of tolerance "monoblock" Industrial 150uF and 50uF capacitors (only this one weighs 2,430 kg including the three fixing brackets!) of my early AR3a, the 6uF one, 109 gr. , therefore a total of 2,539 kg., a nice lightening, not to mention the size of the voluminous double capacitor, no regrets, indeed my poor back thanks me.
  24. Thanks Tom, I have already downloaded the article that I keep for my personal use ... already placed in my archive.
  25. Hi Bill, a single and small photo, but it shows an AR3a well: the first thing I notice is a nice cabinet, at least in the front view, this is a nice thing ... the woofer from various visual characteristics is certainly correct and with the foam that seems to have just been replaced, the mid appears original for its aesthetic aspect (attention that it is the same as the contemporary AR5 and AR LST2 which however have an impedance of 8 ohm; 4 ohm AR3a), finally the tweeter which is probably a subsequent replacement (from external appearance is the latest version supplied by AR for AR3a / AR3a improved, late '74, early '75), even if different for the rear wiring instead of the external one, it is substantially the same as the previous versions and apart from the different positioning of wiring is identical in performance and features to previous tweeters. In conclusion we are faced with an AR3a in good condition, with original and compliant speakers. The external wire wiring changes only the aesthetic impact (in my opinion irrelevant), not the original sound characteristics, Giorgio
