  1. Parts Connexion does have Solen pb in 3.0 and 6.2. I’m sure there are others but hard to search on my phone. Or Try Erse or PE
  2. I think that unless your 30 and 40 year old receivers have been gone over by a good tech they may be tired and not up to par. Your Yamaha choices should work well as would Onkyo, Denon and others. But if your TX830 is within specs I doubt you’ll hear much improvement . The TX8xx series receivers are very good . That Kenwood is a real nice unit too but may be a little underpowered for the Sixes
  3. You should get as close as possible to the capacitance. I’d try to stay within 5%. Axial or radial but virtually all speaker caps are axial. DC voltage should be equal to or greater than original. 100 vdc is fine but so is 250, 400, 600. As dxho said Parts Express is a good source. So is erseaudio.com

    KLH model #12

Sorry. I have never seen a schematic for the Model Twelve and it is certainly not needed for replacing caps and resistors. I do recommend replacing the 5watt resistors with 10 watt.
  5. They should be fine. Just coils of wire so nothing to go bad.
  6. Hi Norman Interesting stuff. I remember the pair of OLAs I restored and I was sadly underwhelmed, much preferring the AR-2ax. Sadly I no longer have the OLAs or the 2ax's but I wonder whether your excellent amp/preamp upgrade is what makes the stacked Advents superior and, just a thought, what stacked 2ax's would sound like in an apples-to-apples comparison. But, like you, I digress.... So I was wondering whether the 2 cabinets were isolated or tied together in the original configuration. Seems to me Sorbothane rings or mats would work well for isolating them. Search ebay for "Sorbothane" and you'll find lots of products. To couple them you'd need spikes or something and that would mess up the veneer. Personally, I'd use Sorbothane. I searched for the original TAS article and found it. Unfortunatel there is much discussion of fusing and amplifiers but none regarding exactly how to stack the speakers. Good luck. Hope some other members (with experience with stacked Advents) can give some good advice. Kent
  7. If any CSP member wants one of the built-indevices, send me a PM. They ONLY work with a KLH Model Eight but it's pretty cool to be able to play a cell phone's MP3 library through the Model Eight. Kent

    AR3's

Welcome Paul Beautiful speakers! Like you, I have 3s that were converted to 3a (but I did it myself). Giorgio's advice about the caps is good but that wax capacitor is most certainly toast. The Sprague can caps "may" still be good but electrolytic capacitors in speakers rarely last more than 30 or 40 years without going out of spec (sometimes spectacularly so). Your caps are going on half a century, at least. Regarding your other questions, I "was" one of the 2 sellers on ebay with the replacement pots. Unfortunately I've sold out (I was selling them here on CSP for $30/pair compared to the other guy's $30 each). Those pots are very good, heavy-duty. Kind of stiff to rotate but I'd say very good build quality. OTOH, L-pads work fine for much less money. They may not be original to the 3/3a but AR did switch to L-pads for later models (maybe the 3a Limited?). Nothing wrong with them. Be sure to download the AR-3a restoration booklet. It will answer a lot of questions http://www.classicspeakerpages.net/library/acoustic_research/original_models_1954-1974/original_models_schematicss/restoring_the_ar-3a/ DO NOT remove the mids and tweets. You're right: too risky and no need. I'm guessing they're walnut but there's a chart somewhere in these pages that shows the wood options. If you don't plan to keep them my advice is don't touch them. Leave them "unmolested". We have a few members in the UK and maybe one of them would be interested. Kent
  9. If you mail me the crossovers I can rebuild them. Send a PM if interested.
  10. Coincidentally, while you were posting here I was posting a new Model Five thread:
  11. Here's the latest Model Five crossover project, completed for a fellow CSP member. Dayton capacitors bypassed with paper-in-oil (PIO) capacitors. Mills resistors.
  12. The extension speaker is mentioned on page 1 of my restoration booklet
  13. Hey Beave, Thanks for the purchase. I'm sending a PM regarding your desire to install it in the Eight. Too bad about the tuning cap. Those are unobtainium and I've relegated more than one Model Eight to the "parts donor" shelf because of a bad tuning capacitor. One suggestion: Make sure there is a gap between the center tuning knob and the larger tuning dial. They can get pressed together and then the friction causes them to turn as a unit. It's a long shot, since you've had yours out of the cabinet, but worht a try. As far as the speakers go, I don't think KLH ever published impedance specs but here's what I can tell you: The original 3" drivers have a DCR of about 8 ohms and they were wired in series, so the speaker assembled has a DCR of about 15 ohms (ish). No filter in these. The later "twelve point five" driver was installed alone, also no filter. They have a DCR of about 8 ohms. The extension speaker was exactly like the radio speaker but had a volume pot on the back and a special flat plug that was sandwiched between the main speaker's plug and the jacks on the radio. I have a few of the extension speakers but some had their flat plugs cut off and bananas installed so they could be used as main speakers. You can achieve the same goal of adding an extension speaker by using stackable banana plugs. I think the extension speakers I have all have the dual 3" drivers. Don't know if KLH made extensions with single 4" drivers but yes, installing 2 speakers in parallel will lower the impedance. Apparently the tube amp can handle a wide range of impedance. Kent
  14. Sorry to disagree but 2.3 pounds will be over-damped. Roy is right: 20-24 oz per box. The utility bags he mentioned are not garbage bags but just the small bags of fg sold in Lowes etc. buy or borrow a cheap fish scale to weigh it

  16. This is an old thread but I wonder if these Buyout MB Quart tweets are right: https://www.parts-express.com/MB-Quart-95-7118-1-Titanium-Dome-Tweeter-6-Ohm-279-464 or these https://www.parts-express.com/MB-Quart-95-7119-1-Titanium-Dome-Tweeter-with-Truncated-Faceplate-6-Ohm-279-466

Nice speakers! I'd buy them myself but, like you I have no space. They'd be perfect for someone with a mid-century modern decor. Do you have the tulip stands? Where to sell them? There's always our For Sale section. It's free. Be sure to post some pictures, tell people where you are and the price. Also check out AudioKarma. They have a "Bartertown" section that you can join (I think it's $25 a year) and you'll reach other (and many of the same) classic speaker lovers. There's always ebay and you'll potentially reach a broader audience but there are fees that add up to about 15%-ish and I'd recommend "local pick-up only." I used to ship speakers but had a bad experience with a damaged KLH Model Five that was well-packed and double-boxed. Also packing up speakers is just a PITA. Some people use Craigs List but watch out for scams (a guy shows up with a cashier's check for more than the amount, asks for the difference in cash, a month later you find out the check is fake) and some people use Facebook Marketplace although I firmly believe Facebook is evil and would never recommend it. Good luck. Kent
  18. Nice! I had to check out their website https://www.rcf.it Looks like they no longer make the 3-way. Those seem to be really nice speakers. Here's some (very little) info: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/RCF_audio I see RCF speakers are available here in the US on Amazon.
  19. Interesting. How about some photos?
  20. All gone. I don't plan to buy more unless there's a huge demand.

  22. Those meters do show up on eBay. Purely cosmetic imho but they look cool. Enjoy the amp and especially the music!
  23. Nice amp. I really like the look of the DA-M10 meters that go with it.

Ebay. Watch for Model Twelve woofers with the double magnet. A pair of Model Five or Twenty-Three woofers would probably be OK.
