Giorgio AR
Again ... I missed it and just bought this pair of AR2x. I couldn't resist, you all know, that I have: AR2, AR2a, AS-2a Heathkit, AR2ax as well as AR48s plus all the components except the AR48b cabinets, but a couple of AR2x until now I didn't even think about finding it and buy it, under my new purchase, a splendid pair of AR2x with the early woofer large frame and six hole, beautiful in my eyes: AR2x

Giorgio AR
I no longer remember how many Acoustic Research pairs I have come to own ... tomorrow I recount everything, but I certainly don't reach thirty pairs yet (not immediately, but I hope to be able to give myself a limit), it is not easy to sleep in the garden now it's too cold, maybe I could fix the caravan, much warmer and raised off the ground! This morning at 9.00 local time the frost melted with the sun.
samberger0357
Your weather seems to match ours here in the San Francisco area. We were in the mid-30's this morning, with ample frost on our car as well. Certainly not cold by standards set in other parts of this country or other parts of the world, but for us it suffices. Happy Holidays!
Giorgio AR
HERE THEY HERE, THEY ARRIVED A FEW AGAIN AT MY HOUSE. PERFECTLY PACKED MY NEW PAIR OF AR2X. Below the photos of the splendid couple of AR2x after packing and then next to the sisters AR2, AR2a ...
samberger0357
Nice! Time to open your museum.
Giorgio AR
AR2x washed with a special product and a damp cloth, they received two coats of linseed oil, the gaskets between the speakers and the seats were missing, those of the tweeters, gray I had them in spare, I did instead those of the woofers. I checked the speakers and measured the resistance of the coils, all perfect as per specification, I did not touch the Pots, just turned and placed on the "Normal" point recommended by AR ... after listening I will know if they need revision! I added new tiny Velcro inserts for fixing the grilles, cleaned the AR2x labels and did a nice photo shoot to show the final result. Now the new pair of AR2x will be connected for test to my Marantz PM6a amp and let's see how they sound ... The AR2x renewed:
reza
lovely , wondering wether I should make the three hour journey to get these https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/224762963453?ssPageName=STRK%3AMEBIDX%3AIT&_trksid=p2060353.m2763.l2648 any opinion/ advice ..... JKent
They look nice but I’m skeptical about “untested “. How hard is it to test speakers? The seller has a very good feedback rating. I’d ask for pictures with the grilles off. If the drivers look good then maybe worth it

If the drivers look good then maybe worth it good feedback for sure but none of it for hifi and yes I'd love to see behind the grilles but feared of how much damage he may do "unglueing" them or if he'd even be prepared to do that
Aadams
16 minutes ago, reza said: eared of how much damage he may do "unglueing" them or if he'd even be prepared to do that That version used Velcro on the grills. No glue.

reza
so here are his pics so obv need refoam , also he said ... They sound fantastic. Pots all seem to be working although one mid is not so smooth so probably needs a look at reckon I'm going to pass on these
Giorgio AR
Very nice, European cabinet, very nice AR2ax never harassed ... the woofer will have its first refoam, the Pots to be deoxidized and probably the capacitors to be replaced, the teak cabinets look very fine, minimal signs, they will only need some cleaning and new treatment with veneer oil ... the asking price is excellent. You will let us know how it turns out
Aadams
3 hours ago, reza said: reckon I'm going to pass on these Agree with Giorgio. You will wait a long time to find a better unmolested pair. At 130 BP = 175 US the price is very reasonable.
JKent
4 hours ago, reza said: reckon I'm going to pass on these Why? Foam, pots and caps are to be expected. Agree with Giorgio and Aadams. If you do the work yourself the total cost will be roughly $250 USD and you’ll have some truly great speakers.

reza
another one... so which is the one to really go for I now have an option on a pair of 2A's as well, I'll prob get them anyway but wondered are the woofers , apart from the cloth surrounds, the same as the later 2AX . are they interchangeable
JKent
Take a look at this thread To answer your questions; the woofers are not the same. I like the aluminum-frame cloth-surround woofer in the 2 and 2a but they won't fit your European 2ax. IMHO the 2ax is superior in every other way. The orange dome tweeter on the 2a is trouble prone and often the dome pops off with age. The dual mid-range driver arrangement was meant to improve dispersion when the speakers were placed horizontally, on a bookshelf. Vertically they don't work that well. The mid (actually it's a tweeter) on the 2ax is better. The 2a is a nice speaker and if you find a pair in really good condition for a really low price go for it but the 2ax is superior. Of my many AR pairs, the AR2a are my favorite along with the AR3a; they were cheap at the time, but they still sound magical to my ears now, they deserve a nice restoration, they will accompany you beautifully and well-sounding for the next 40 years. reza
not mcuh left of the labels Giorgio Serial no. D32913 as best as I can read it
reza
more 2ax's into the house , sadly on carrying them downstairs he managed to catch them on something puncturing a hole in the grill and the woofer surround , luckily not the cone, more work for me , still were free so cant complain
Giorgio AR
Nice specimens, regarding the torn foam (the foam suspensions look recent) it can be glued as it was before the tear; better than changing both suspensions (the characteristics of two different foams would not be identical) as for car tires.
