New AR 3 grills....matches OEM..

Awhile back I ordered AR3 grills from a company that advertised that they had been around since 1940's. It looked close but didn't have an OEM grill to compare. I recently bought a pair of AR3's at the Midwest AudioFest and only one speaker had an original grill. Was working on the 3's today and remembered I still had some of the new grill material stored. I went and got it and laid it on top of the original grill.....and to my surprise....they match almost exactly in pattern and material. Pic shows the two but flash washed out the new slightly. Was very pleased to find this.....:)

Yes. http://www.wendellfabrics.com

I bought some a while back but had to buy a huge roll. I cut it up and offered it to members here but it was a PITA to cut and it couldn't be folded for mailing or it would crease.

More recently another member found a seller who would sell smaller pieces. Forget who found it but here's the link: https://qcomponents.ca/Mellotone-DF7002-36.html

DF7022 is the correct number. It looks light but the original saran grilles have yellowed and darkened with age.

Yes!...forgot to add company...thanks. I remember getting this from you awhile ago. I was able to order a small batch that will do three speakers...and why I had this leftover. Never had a chance to compare and was shocked to see it is the same after fifty years.

Lakecat,

Regarding you original grill, that will probably clean up very well, though maybe not an exact shade match for the new material.

A couple of months ago I bought a pair of 3's that had spent a significant portion of their life in a smoky environment. i mixed a solution of Simple Green and water at around 1:3 and brushed it on. After around 10 minutes I rinsed it off and was very surprised (and very satisfied) with the result.

That was me. ra.ra recommended q components, located in Canada. Their seran was also a virtual perfect match, like shown above, and I made new grills for my 2nd set of 3's, in the "Stopped for toilet paper and found a set of 3's" thread.

Cheers, Glenn

In your discussion of replacement grill fabric for AR3 speakers you give two different numbers. Which one would be correct? DF7022 or DF7002. Thanks

I just restored a pair of AR-3s with the DF7002 material and I am very happy with how they turned out.  The difference between the two is the DF7002 is white and the DF7022 is cream and from the sample photos on the website seems to have a slightly tighter weave but you may want to contact them to confirm.  Regardless of which color you go with be aware that one yard will be enough material to two grills.  I ordered two yards and still have over a yard left over.  I would be happy to ship it to you for the cost of shipping if you would like it.  Just send me a message with your address. - Steve

When I did my grills, QComponents sent me the white Saran by mistake, and sent me the correct cream color Saran. I still have the white Saran from anyone is interested, just cover shipping costs.

Keep in mind, the Saran is a plastic type material, is stiff and somewhat difficult to wrap around the grill frames tightly. It takes some work. I'll add this tip, after you trim it once stapled to the frames, use a lit match to very carefully, and briefly, melt the Saran edges to prevent fraying.
