  1. Given the subsequent Allison speakers, one can imagine that the paper dome was preferred by this brilliant designer! According to the AR "philosophy" each speakers built were the best of the time: AR1, then AR3, then AR3a then AR10TT, the same goes for tweeters of every era. Personally I appreciate both types of tweeters, similar but with different edges and certainly greater emission volume in soft dome tweeters.
  2. Rare example of early AR10TT! It is understood that the woofers could be like the subsequent tweeters and deriving from AR10 / 11 MK2. Note the early AR10TT own slide switches, instead of subsequent toggle switches.
  3. It was a new pair unsold at the time and still sealed before being sold (at auction) in 2015, under the photos as evidence.
  4. I finally found in my archive the photos of an AR2a speaker covered in birch, it is not mine but it is practically mint, including original packaging and original labels declaring the veneer wood! Compare with Lakecat's AR3s.
  5. Are these the stands you used? I have a very responsible 9 year old son, but I would not use these stands in my home. It must also be said that I have the LST which are larger and above all heavier than the AR LST2!
  6. Hi Chi, you can post photos of your AR10TTs and close-up photos of the tweeters. Sometimes there can be a break in the thin cables running on the flange; I'll show you this problem on the tweeter of section. mid / high of the AR78LS.
  7. Perfectly visible! Your attempt to reconstruct the paper gasket deserves: thick paper and the right stiffness, compass and scalpel blade, good dexterity. I add (I searched my photo archive) a 200041-0 mid, not mine with the intact original paper ring before receiving the new foam.
  8. I don't think the AR38BX mid has this thickness (the AR datasheet from what I read is from 1981, corrected for AR48S). The 200041-0 AR48S mid shares the magnet with the later 200053-0, but the gasket flange is round and larger in diameter. I have the mid / high section of the AR48B, slightly earlier than your AR38BXI with mid 200053-0 and during the refoaming, removing the old material, no traces of thickness, note however greater thickness of glue! Same situation in the refoaming of later TNG 2100460, no thickness. AR48S mid AR48B mid AR TNG Mid or Mid/W This belongs to late AR1MS, early use AR components, in this case the cone is identical to the 200041-0 mid!!
  9. As always, the experience arises with the attempts and mistakes that are made over time, in my case after removing the paper rings and therefore ruined, I asked Larry (AR-v) when I ordered the new surrounds about these thicknesses and he said which were needed to get the mid's back to original specs. I too am fascinated by the original yellow color of these mid's surrounds, but now after 40 years we have to settle for these foams which are the most similar in characteristics to the original ones. P.S. As already written in another thread in my opinion these are the best cone mids ever listened to.
  10. Patient waiting is the best ally! Check Hi..Sh ... often and you will find one (sometimes an identical pair is better) correct woofer to enjoy a rare pair of AR5s.
  11. Some time ago I renewed the foam (woofer and mid) of my pair of AR48S, no problem for the refoaming of the woofers, instead in removing the old yellow foam of the mid's I have mistakenly removed and ruined the thicknesses present between the foam and the basket! I remedied by using gasket paper for engine casings of corresponding thickness, thus restoring the correct height of the cones after refoaming, under the photographic equipment of the work. Mid with original deteriorated foam Old ring near new rebuilt New ring, glued and painted in black AR48S pair mid's New correct foam (provided by Larry Vintage AR) New dustcap installed Mid's reinstalled in AR48S cabinets
  12. Here we have a pair of AR10TT MK2, '78 year compared to my other pair of AR10TT Replica or "Limited", about '90, they are so unknown and rare that unlike the AR3a Limited sisters of the same they do not have an original name . These AR10TT Replicas were made in Italy upon Acoustic Research approval and specifications with Tonegen components and cabinets made by Italian furniture maker in a small series of unknown quantities! The veneer is in Italian walnut and in the back is in single sheet, note the difference of the back covering with the brother made in England. 13. Small documentation to illustrate the correct foam with 5/8 "roll for our AR3a speakers. The woofer of my AR3a improved which had an incorrect aftermarket surround as well as in the diameter of the roll, also in the other fundamental measures, then replaced by the correct one. The visual difference is noticeable. Not-compliant foam After replacement, the same woofer with the correct 5/8" roll foam
  14. A compatible woofer has appeared, even if it is certainly subsequent to yours, with Alnico magnet, in the opinion of many you should not hear differences between the two types ... you can buy and use this and then calmly find a corresponding woofer in Alnico! https://www.ebay.it/itm/224557070962?mkevt=1&mkcid=1&mkrid=724-53478-19255-0&campid=5338381872&toolid=10001&customid=b77be2e6-f417-11eb-b5e8-616462313436
  15. AR10 / 11 mid's have surely ferrofluid, AR LST and AR3a no, maybe the latest examples of the mid's AR3a could be improved with ferrofluid ... let's see answers on this question from other forumers.
  16. These are not good, they have a large frame and 6 holes and 11 "in diameter: same size as the early woofers with Alnico magnet, aluminum frame and canvas suspension. There are no correct AR2ax woofers for sale right now, take a little patience and you will surely find the correct woofers.
  17. Are you sure that the midranges are not working, you have checked the resistance values with a multimeter (better if you remove the midranges, check directly on the contacts, sometimes there may be problems before the speakers).
  18. Try asking if the seller is willing to sell the mids. outside the auction. If shipped as valueless second-hand items, there will likely be no additional customs fees and taxes!
  19. Earthnz, if these mid. they are not for international shipping, I can send a message to the seller and ask if he sells me 2 mid.
  20. At the moment there is a couple of AR10 / 11 mid's in Italy, they are expensive, but they are certainly OK. https://www.kijiji.it/annunci/audio-tv-e-video/varese-annunci-cardano-al-campo/acoustic-research-ar10-ar11-midrange/153956572 This one is less expensive (maybe it is possible to have a couple)The name in the ad is wrong! https://www.ebay.it/itm/123757382857?hash=item1cd083ccc9:g:bssAAOSwnQFcz05b
  21. Well, even your AR3a are European and assembled in Holland for comparison look at the photos contained in this my recent thread in which you see my early pair of AR3a, Holland made, another European pair of a friend of mine and the corresponding all-made model in the USA. : The three pairs you see in this thread are all covered in walnut.
  22. Usually if the AR speakers have labels on the back, these allow you to distinguish the assembly and build status of the cabinets: AR3a USA, on label is indicated: Serial no. 3A xxxxx AR3a England, on label is indicated: Serial no.E (EA) 3A xxxxx AR3a Holland, on label is indicated: Serial no. H3A xxxxx In England, cabinets was built in Ingham ( Norfolk ), if I remember correctly. Label AR3a USA made Label AR3a Holland made
  23. I have yet to finish the crossovers that come from the AR92, I like to tone down the mid / high range that the original AR58S crossover does not allow. You were right to save the original components.
  24. Bravo owlsplace, there are also my tests with my Acoustic Research: the AR58s cabinets with AR10TT speakers.
  25. Tom, the AR3a version of Freek, is completely veneered, does not have the (visible) solid wood frame as usual in US cabinets. From the photos, the grain is longitudinal and uniform (already the effect of the paint remover is good), very particular, perhaps it deserves a single color stain and subsequent well-done oiling and then see the effect achieved. Other images of the speakers would help a lot, including the back, label if present, and individual speakers. Freek you have to be patient, show us your AR3a, eventually we will discover the veneer wood, which in my opinion is very beautiful.
