OLAs again

Nice work, as usual.

I remember reading a post of yours years ago about an Advent restore. When you were finished you still felt the Advents just didn't do it.

How about these? Are you selling them? No decision yet?

I always felt that the largest downside of the Advent (OLA) was the shrillness of the orange tweeter.

Maybe it could be tamed with a crossover adjustment?

I still have my OLA pair. Too many fond memories to part with them.

I just did a pair. Sent the woofers out to Rich So of ADS fame. He does Bose and Advents as well as a few more. Did the surrounds in Butyl Rubber instead of the foam. Compliance is undetectable as far as any difference from the original response. These will not rot out or need repair for the next 50 years. I will post some pics of what I used for gasket material. The color matches the goop that is holding the screen on the tweeter. I got the cloth from Guilfords of Maine, and used an eggshell color. It is what I remember the color being on my original pair back in 75. This pair has a few scratches, I got them off of Craigslist from NH. All the original paper work is still intact on the back including the warranty cards. They were never sent it. Paper is a bit yellowed, they didn't use acid free paper on them. Not sure if acid free was out back then. I used a staple gun, electric and 1/8th inch leg staples. Reinforced the corner folds with hot melt glue for strength. First pair I ever worked on, just wish I could get the cabinets perfect.

This is how neet Rich did the job. He also shims the voice coil. I could never get them this good myself.

This mortite brown rope caulking fit like a glove with 2 strips wide, and flattened out perfectly to the edge of the basket when the screws were torqued down.

Notice the color of the brown goop holding the screen on the tweeter. You can just barely see the edge of the caulking under the basket.

Looks good!

I think the problem with your pictures may be that they are too big. Ideal size is about 100KB each.

Thanks J. I have them all over the place on the hard drive, and some in Google that I drag and drop, and some in Windows 10 that I upload. The drag and drop ones seem to be the ones screwing up. I will get it eventually. Just want to make sure I share some information for the next person so their project will go easier and be successful.

There are blanks, first, for the pictures for me but then they all appear below that.

I didn't know or had forgotten they made brown Mortite (mine is gray and is still pliable in the box after 16 years). I guess it make sense. I've even just used a single rope around the woofer but two is probably better. I have even rerolled it after removing a woofer and reinstalling.

My 1970 pair is awaiting grille cloth installation and i want to do it with staples. I bought them from a guy who moved to Rochester, MN from out east. He said his parents lived right down the street from Advent's original location and may have purchased them right from the factory.

BTW, I always like it when I check in here and see topics in bold on the left.

Pete, that first link shows a 12 TPI "primitive linen" that looks close in the picture. The 18-count Weichelt linen from 123 Stitch is perfect for AR speakers but not so much for Advent, but it would look nice.

Finished the recap today. I used 15uF Carlis to replace the 16uF caps. I figure close enough--certainly within spec. The Carlis measure just a tad over 15.

Woofers are re-foamed. I got the surrounds for the Masonite woofers from SpeakerWorks but have since learned I could have used the ones for metal frames (which I happened to have on hand).

They're playing now and sound good. I'll probably insert one of your Baffle Step Compensators Pete. I have one that I cobbled together a few years back.

Cabinets could use a little more refinisheing and then there's the grilles. Hope to have them complete this year 😉

@JKent  The 12 TPI Mixed primitive linen looks closer to the original to me, but I wonder what it looks like in person.  What do you think?

I also wonder how they get the weave so straight on the original grills from the factory, anyone?
