AR Receiver partial recapped question..?

I just had someone helping me replaced the most of my AR receiver's CAPS with the modern parts,,, and I am wondering once my AR receiver been recapped with these modern parts.. does it sound original classic AR sounds or It sounds different comparing to original..? Now looks like It sounds more bright treble and less tight bass then before... Since I am always favor to the classic parts so I might have misjudged ..

Before the receiver being serviced, It had a hum and little static, thump to the speakers every time when turning it off. I recommended him using the good parts such as: Philips, Sprague, and NOS parts, the two main filter Caps I recommended him using the SPRAGUE CAPACITOR 4800 uf 50 VOLTS EP50-482 POWERLYTIC 36DX 48.. but He said why I kept going to use the very old expensive parts, that just wasted the money,, and advised me using the same value modern parts..

So my main question in this thread is.. with those  same value replacement modern parts, does my AR receiver still sounding original, classic AR sounds...? Any opinion about the NOS vintage parts comparing to the new parts, making the original sound changes or not..when recapping the vintage Amp..

@ For over 15 caps and including labor, the guy charged me only $70 bucks, the big size PIC below is most of the caps he replaced..

I agree, you're wasting money buying nos parts. I'd source some quality caps from mouser or a similar site.

You need to keep in mind, as the old caps have drifted out of spec, it's changed the way the amp sounds. As you replace parts, the amp may sound different from what you're used to hearing. Some people feel that there's a break in period for capacitors as well, so keep that in mind.

Hi the other thing to remember is that capacitors break down and leak overtime so nos is not practical the other thing to remember with the older circuit board is as the caps value changes over time it can cause other components to change there value too because of the changes in voltage or current

Coincidentally, I just recapped my AR receiver. I had bought it from CSP member George "ToastedAlmond", who, sadly, has since passed away. I'd heard the receiver was a dog to work on so I took it to my tech, who checked it out, replaced some bad caps. He is NOT a fan of wholesale recapping but when he saw all those black and red Callins caps in there he recommended I do a full recap. Don't seem to have kept a record of the caps I replaced and IIRC I left some of the big cans that tested OK.

And it WAS a dog getting at some of them. In fact, I accidentally brushed the tuner dial cord with my soldering iron and... well, you know. Learned how to re-string a tuner dial! ;)

So, to address the OP

  • Replacing those caps was really necessary
  • $70 was a real bargain
  • NOS caps are a bad idea
  • Good caps to use are Panasonic 105 degreeC. I've used Nichicon and Elna and they're fine but Pannys are consistently good and inexpensive.

My AR is back in the shop so the tech can double-check my work. Unfortunately I have a bad meter but other than that it's all good. But I may be selling it after all this effort. I was using it for my AR-3a's and I've been eyeing a McIntosh amp.....

HI!

Thanks Jason4300, Nefertem and Jkent for the practical experience about the old parts. So now I'm relieved to go ahead recapping another one...Yes Jkent It is coincidental,,in the same period time both our amplifiers needing to repair. I love to have the MAC gear but It is too high for my budget. About the repairman I knew him three months ago on the day I went to pick up the Sansui 5000A extra modified bluetooth for my friend, with the mod bluetooth for the vintage receiver so I think He has good skills for his repaired job but might not  for AR equipment as well... His main job was working at the computer & vintage video, audio Electronics service that he worked extra time at home as hobby and charging these things for a friendly price. So from now on I do not fear my vintage audio stuffs be stopped working suddenly anymore.. Yup! Any amplifier that stops working, just bring to him with low fixing charged.. :)

I hope that you will find good one and let us know something about your Mac journey...
