Guest David in MA
Happy new year to all...After talking with couple of speaker repair shops, I decided to try and reform my AR9's by myself. The factor here was the shipping cost (too much money)...anyways, I came across this site for AR9 reforming parts:http://www.simplyspeakers.com/2doityourself.htmThey have surround parts for all AR models. Have anyone used this vendor? Or, could you recommend anyone? Thanks.
r_laski
David , I haven’t used Simplyspeakers kits. I have re-foamed several pairs of AR 12 inch woofers and AR-9 8 inch lower midranges using kits from Parts Express www.partsexpress.com. Their kits have everything you need to re-foam a pair of woofers. You need two kits for your AR-9s – 4 woofers. Always re-foam both woofers in a pair of speakers / both woofers in each AR-9. Advice:If your 12 inch and 8 inch drivers need re-foaming, do the 8 inchers first. It will build your confidence in DIY re-foaming before you take on the 12 inchers. Use the search feature to find discussions we’ve had on re-foaming. There is a lot of information on how to prepare the woofer for re-foaming. It’s up to you to decide whether or not you shim the voice coil during the re-foam. Many have re-foamed successfully without shimming. I prefer to shim.Rich
Andy
I used them to refoam my EPI 100's and am happy with the kit, they seem to be a pretty good speaker company.

r_laski
David, Don't be fooled by the picture. Parts Express includes two pair of foam surrounds in many of their kits. One pair of surrounds is flat. The other pair has a beveled (sloped) inner ring. The sloped inner ring surround is the one you need for the AR-9 8 inch lower midrange. The link you posted is NOT for the AR 12 inch woofer. This is the correct kit specifically for the AR 12 inch woofer:http://www.partsexpress.com/pe/showdetl.cf...tnumber=260-972Parts Express, like many others, incorrectly lists the AR 12 inch woofer as an AR 11 inch woofer because of its non-standard cone diameter.Rich
Pete B
Hi David,I've used RSSOUND:http://rssound.com/ for both the AR11/12" woofer and Advents with excellent results.AR11/12' Measured Fs = ~15 Hz: http://www.classicspeakerpages.net/dc/dcbo..._id=7172&page=2Large Advent Measured Fs = ~18 Hz: http://www.classicspeakerpages.net/dc/dcbo...sg_id=578&page=I used other brands for AR-2ax woofers and Genesis 2s and they were stiffer, sorry I used them.RSSOUND only gives you what you need, so you will not have piles of unused material.I used this glue and it works very well for foam to paper cones, it's easy to work with for starting out and offers an excellent bond:Aleenes Tacky glue, it's a PVA glue:http://www.duncancrafts.com/products/locator.aspPete B. RoyC
Hi Pete,What did RSSound charge for the AR 12" surrounds? I'm in agreement..the stiffness of replacement surrounds varies quite a bit; the thinner/soft ones being best for ARs. It would be nice to have one reliable source for the soft type. The Parts Express AR 12 inch replacement surround kit (#260-972, "Surround Kit For 11" AR") is a good one, being thin with the 5/8" roll. It costs around $21 to $24/pr depending on the quantity purchased.Roy
Pete B
The "other" ones I used were from PE however they were purchased a year or 2 ago, I don't know if PE is using the same source or not.You can go to the RSSOUND site, $5.75 each for Advent, and $5.85 each for AR11/12".Pete B. r_laski
David, Sorry for the delay in replying. I could not access this forum for the past few days. The AR-9 8 inch lower midrange is a "standard size". If you are still interested in the PE kits, PE kit 260-920 is the appropriate kit.http://www.partsexpress.com/pe/showdetl.cf...tnumber=260-920Just to reiterate, this kit comes with both flat and beveled surrounds. The beveled surrounds are the correct ones to use.One thing about these 8 inch drivers. The dust cap is very porous and flimsy. If you cut the dust cap to shim, its almost impossible to glue it back on. You will need to install a new dust cap. This is not a big deal.
