  1. Looks good. It might be simpler later if you re-install the middle post before you get the lpads permanently positioned.
  2. The tweeter lpad appears correct. A wider angle image showing the caps would be good.
  3. I don't know what you are calling highs. The tweeters in these models don't operate below 5khz so they will never be loud even when operating properly. Your next big payoff will be cleaning the pots or replacing with lpads and resistors. I would choose lpads. The crossovers may be ok. Those Compulytics are probably still good which means the small paper cap on the tweeter is the only one to replace as a matter of course. Your tweeters will be an issue in the end but you can decide about that later after they are working.
  4. I thought you were comparing to 9 to 9lsi. With both at zero db attenuation and on the same equalizer they have very similar spectral balance. Set the 91s to zero attenuation and they should be very similar. It works for me with a 58s which is the same as a 91 but no switches. I am not saying the 12" 3way vertical series sounds the same as either 9, just very similar spectral balance in the upper mid-range when models with attenuation switches are at 0db.
  5. Quickest way without the woofers. 1. Make sure your woofer +/- wire ends are not touching in the box. Put some black tap over them JIC 2. connect your speaker wires to the 1 and 2 posts 3. Turn on the amp at zero volume and turn up just until you can hear something. The mid and tweeter should both operate through the pots if the crossover components have continuity, which is the most probable outcome. You may need to turn the pot knobs several times depending on corrosion. Adams
  6. Your cabs look good. Unless you are refinishing there is no need to remove the mids if they operate. Same with the tweeters unless you are replacing with Q1Rs or having yours rebuilt. Be careful removing either. The old caulk is very clingy and impatience can lead to damaged flanges or worse. AR5 mids are scarce and not repairable. Adams
  7. Agree. The LSI version is close to the AR9 at 0db attenuation. Mine use an equalizer 3db down between 750 and 5000hz. Adams
  8. Interested in acquiring empty AR11 or 3 series cabinets. AR58S might be OK. Crossovers not necessary. Adams
  9. This thread has everything known about this tweeter and its use as a replacement in early ARs.
  10. No do not. There are two rebuilders in the US, which you use depends on the tweeter domes. Are the domes on your tweeters missing or damaged? Also you should rebuild in pairs. Question: Do your tweeters have 3 orange dots around the base of the domes? Adams
  11. Unless the paper cone feels compromised I would say you don't have a problem. It is an odd pattern of discoloration.
  12. Reduce the file size to 100kb and they should load.
  13. Have you downloaded and reviewed the AR3a Restoration Guide? I Don't see an inch thick dark ring on the woofer. Adams
  14. To my knowledge AR 5 mids are not currently repairable but tweeters can be repaired. Are you in the US? Can you provide photos of the tweeter pair?
  15. I have been waiting for you to get back on this. Do you have an opinion vs the Q1R? Is there an objective difference? Adams

    AR18's

Best bet is purchase from someone who is a member of this group. Post your request in the for sale/wanted forum. You will probably get a Personal Message if there is a seller for your item. You can also try Vintage AR on Ebay. General advice. Don't buy drivers where the seller states "as is" and "untested". If the foam is rotten it is not a problem as long as the model number is shown and correct with no visible damage and there is electrical continuity with no rubbing in the voice coil. Adams

    AR18's

Most here would look for proper used AR replacements. The Simply Speakers units have a reputation for proper fit but not same as original performance and might not be an upgrade from the RS units already in place. The correct model numbers for the drivers can be found in the library. CSP member Ra Ra will know a lot more about this. Adams

    What are you saying?

Do you have the original woofers? If so provide photos. They might be repairable.
  20. Welcome J. Are you asking about difference in sound or difference in appearance? I see xmas111 has just posted the difference in configuration and impedance. The library section has LST Brochures. Use this link http://www.classicspeakerpages.net/library/acoustic_research/original_models_1954-1974/original_models_brochures/ @Aadams Adams
  21. I can't say you will notice the difference between rebuilt and a properly setup HiVi, with a 2ax, but it is sad to lose those tweeter bodies for the AR5s and 3as that need them. You might need two more of thesefor the HiVi pair.
  22. Sorry for the Q1R typo. Not all tweeters, only the tweeters with three orange dot suspension like yours. Don’t toss your old tweeters if you install the HiVi.
  23. If your tweeter has not been rebuilt or you have not installed a QR1 mod then what you are hearing is probably similar to an AR2 shown below. The "house sound" of the 3 ways assumes a properly functioning tweeter above 5000hz. Most of the AR two ways beginning with AR4 series, that used the wide range tweeters, will sound at least as good as the the 10 inch two ways only missing a little of the bass. AR14 was the pinnacle of 10" two ways for AR. Adams
