AR LST-2 Tweeters

Greetings AR Lovers:

I have a pair of LST-2's which I bought new in 72 (or 73 or 74). In moving them across country during the summer of '76 I was ignorant of packing methods and the tiny wires that went from the dome to the terminals snapped. I have tried to "reattach" them in the past with no success and they seem to be dead in any case.

A few years ago I contacted Audiovox (I think) and was told that a replacement was about to be manufactured. I never did the followup and now that I have a few bucks to spend I was wondering if anyone here knows if an exact replacement exists and if not what might be a good substitute?

Thanks!

Welcome to CSP....

The LST-2 uses the same tweeter as the AR-5 and AR-2ax. No replacements matching the original tweeters have been manufactured. If you do not have to replace very many of them, it is best to try to find used original tweeters from the AR LST-2, AR-2ax, or the AR-5.

This recent thread will provide some insight:

I also have a pair of AR-LST2's that I bought in 1975. When I bought them, each had one original tweeter, one Yamaha tweeter, and one KEF tweeter. The output from the original tweeter in each LST2 is very low. Most of the high freqencies are from the Yamaha tweeters. I use them for side surrounds in my home theater system with AR9LSi's for the main speakers and AR3a's for rear surrounds. The LST2's are ideal for side surrounds as they have wider dispersion than any other speaker I've owned.

Overall, the LST2's don't sound smooth like my AR2a's, AR9LSi's, and AR3's. Finding four original 8 ohm tweeters for these speakers wouldn't be so much of a problem, but the cost would be higher than I care to invest in these speakers.

Can someone recommend a modern 8 ohm tweeter that will fit in the original openings and not require crossover mods to make it work? Various threads on this board about Peerless, VIFA, and other modern tweeters used as replacements in old AR systems don't present a clear recommendation.

The apparent "low output" of the original AR tweeter is the way these AR systems were designed. It is due to the very high crossover frequency. Modern tweeters without crossover modifications will easily compromise the LST-2's response.

My response to the OP's post, and link to the "AR-2ax Tweeter Replacement Options" thread, applies to your question as well.

Well I was hoping not to have to cough up $480 for 6 replacements. Any other suggestions?

Hi there

I was faced with buying 8 tweeters for a pair of used AR-LST's that I bought about 15 years ago.

Every advertiser I could find in the USA that sold raw drivers was written to for price and availablity.

Some were out of business, some were too young to know what LST's were and there was some quotes.

AB Tech was the the highest priced at about $70.00+/- each, plus S&H, plus duty, with the then current manufactured copy of the original AR 3/4" 4 ohm dome tweeter.

A local service techie suggested maybe Vifa at around $25.00+/- each.

I was reading about Vifa, Scan, Seas, and any other 4 ohm tweeter, most all were 6 or 8 ohms.

I decided to ask the techie about the newly manufactured AR tweeters.

He quoted me a very reasonable price and so I ordered the eight from him.

He also had 6 or 8 original mids and one used original tweeter which I also bought.

The 8 tweeters I received from him all have a dark soft foam front plate cover ring.

The 3/4" domes are supported by a face-mounted surround rather than the original dome.

I'm sure the part numbers are stamped on the rear and whenever I ever remove one of them I will take photos and post them here.

Today I may have thought about ebuy but the 4 ohm AR tweeters are rarer than the 8 ohm version, so they command a premium price.

When I read here about the original AR dome rot foam and how, when it happens, the tweeters output declines.

There is no repairs for this, at this time at least.

I was buying Seas 4 ohm tweeters in anticipation of doing the re and re as my tweeters die on my 2nd pair which are still original.

These tweeters will require an adapter plate but their output and efficiency should be a close match, the lesser dispersion will not be an issue.

As far as I can tell there is no foam under their dome to deteriorate.

I have never read anywhere about using these tweeters for the LST's or Allison tweeters as well.

The Allison tweeters I believe are 6 ohm, but very well reviewed.

A recent thought that I had and wrote here about was to replace one AR-LST 4 ohm driver, tweeter in this particular case, with two 8 ohm

AR-2AX or AR-5 tweeters and wire them in parallel.

This should also work with the mids.

This is my thoughts and I hope you can see that you are not the only one with difficult choices to make.

Whatever you decide, unless they're original used tweeters, will be a compromise, some easier to live with and budget for.

Even if you buy the currently available AR substitute, they will fit the bolt holes, but will not be close in sound output and dispersion.

The availability of used AR-LST-2 8 ohm tweeters is more common at least.

Be very careful with the sellers packaging as the dome and sensitive leads require very, very special packaging methods.

$80 per driver? Why not use the $23 Hi-Vi's Roy wrote about? Or even the cheaper $16 Hi-Vi?

Are ALL 6 drivers shot?

I am following this thread from Roy C

http://www.classicspeakerpages.net/IP.Board/index.php?showtopic=6684

which shows this part number: 12000840

http://www.simplyspeakers.com/acoustic-research-replacement-tweeter-12000840.html

$79 per

I did a search for the Hi-Vi's and only found this tweet going for around $80 per

http://www.parts-express.com/pe/showdetl.cfm?Partnumber=297-400

and this one

http://abtechservices.com/arspeakers.html for $62.50.

Could someone could show me a link for these less expensive versions and any instructions for any mods that might have to be done to get the right crossover/balance?

Thanks a million!

You are looking at the wrong HiVi tweeter. It is this one (HiVi Q1R):

http://www.parts-express.com/pe/showdetl.cfm?Partnumber=297-417

or

http://www.madisoundspeakerstore.com/soft-dome-tweeters/hi-vi-q1r-1-fabric-dome-tweeter-116-mm-flange/

This tweeter is also being sold by "Vintage AR" on Ebay at a considerable mark-up.

Much has been discussed in this forum about this issue, and these tweeters.

Read this recent thread for much more info on the replacement tweeter issue:

The AB Tech tweeter (also sold by others) is the one you have correctly identified, and it is the expensive choice. It fits the hole, but still requires a modification to the crossover. It does not represent a sonic improvement over the HiVi tweeter.

Hi Roy,

I went back and read the posts about the LST-2 mods and they are talking about swapping a 6uf cap with a 3uf cap on the crossover. Then I downloaded the schematic for the LST-2 crossover from the library and the parts list for that crossover does not list a 6uf cap. The parts list shows:

12uf

60uf

72uf and

1000uf

Am I missing something? Also what voltage are these caps suppose to be? I was about to order all the parts and I wanted to make sure I had everything I needed before I did surgery. Hope I'm not being a pain. I am after all a newbie. Thanks again.

The LST-2 tweeter cap is different from the 5 and 2ax due to the parallel arrangement of the tweeters. The 12uf cap will be reduced if you are using all replacement tweeters. The LST-2 is somewhat uncharted territory...

Just sent you a PM..

Roy
