In the past I've used Layne, who did a great job but took a very, very long time (and I understand they're currently incommunicado) and Millersounds, who did a great job and Bill Legrand is a heck of a nice guy. I know there are lots of others and perhaps different companies are better with different driver types. The types in question would be a Snell (maybe Vifa or Seas - I don't actually have it yet) 8" paper cone driver from the early 80s. I wouldn't hesitate to send it to Millersounds again, but maybe there's someone who specializes in this kind of thing.Tried the DIY-route once, and it was a total disaster.Thanks,Dake Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...

When I had a pair of drivers done at Layne, the man said that there were often small differences in surrounds for 8" drivers and you had to be careful to get a good match. I know Advents, for example, require specially sized foam surrounds. Is there anything special to pay attention to with the 8" SEAS/Vifa drivers Snell uses? I just want to get the driver back to being as close to the original as possible. They come in varying degrees of stiffness. What I do on a refoam job is pick the one closest to the one I'm replacing. There is no exact science to this unless I have access to Vifa's original parts. However, I don't; same as most independent reconers. You'll have to go back to Vifa or find a factory authorized service center if you want an EXACT match. Typically, authorized service centers have exclusive access to original repair parts. JBL is a glaring example. You can't get their parts unless you are an authorized service person.What I can tell you is that I've done many, many refoam jobs and haven't had a complaint yet about mismatching the surround. I got the drivers today and it looks like he went an refoamed them himself, as a favor to me. Looks like he did a decent job, but I'll have to listen to them. He has a lot of experience with vintage equipment. If I don't feel right about them, can I drop you an email and see about getting them refoamed again? In both cases I received back professionaly re-edged speakers within one week of sending them out! I would use them again without hesitation. Would be for Allison One woofers (needed very soon)and possibly mids and the 12" woofers from a pair of AR9's.I got an e-mail from someone who is local to where I live, but I want to also check out the businesses that do this. I can't seem to find "MillerSounds." Is there some kind of web site, or is it telephone only?I also came across a place at www.simplyspeakers.com (Florida outfit). Guest Primoz Zertek Posted September 3, 2006 Report Share Posted September 3, 2006 I have an epi microtower mt3 speakers.The drivers should be pro 24 for bass/full and pro 2 for tweeters.These little 4.5" bass drivers have round magnet, but mine have square type.Sorround is a tiny cloth impregnated with something like silicone.You can see the light trough if you face them towards the lamp.Any idea what I have?Refoamed?Or maybe substitutes?Thanks. So does Minh Luong, a member here. I did my own refoaming of AR2ax woofers with a nice complete kit from MSound, with excellent email support. It is not really difficult, but not for the feint of heart--you need the hand of a surgeon and the patience of a saint. I've heard many people say it's "easy," but I've also read about people buying used speakers with botched refoam jobs! The other was fitted with almost identical drivers made by Rola - go figure. Tweeters, of course, were the venerable inverted-dome "air-spring"......um, tweeters.
