  1. Adam All the cap suggestions JKent recommended are good choices. I like the .33uf Bennic and 4.7 Carli caps wired in parallel idea for the ESR reasons. Here are some of the 5uf Unicon electrolytes I pulled out of mine. I use the Dayton 5.1uf cap as a replacement. I also replace the spring loaded clips with binding post. http://www.parts-express.com/dayton-audio-dmpc-51-51uf-250v-polypropylene-capacitor--027-423 http://www.parts-express.com/parts-express-gold-plated-banana-5-way-speaker-wire-binding-post-terminal--260-302 I also have a set with these installed. http://www.soniccraft.com/product_info.php/audiocap-theta-5uf-200vdc-p-72 My opinion, save your money, I really can't here the difference.
  2. DavidR Here is a recent reply from Rick to this question. Hey Larry, part number 610 365 surrounds are the correct for AR 8" woofers. If you need more, please let me know. Thx,rc Sent from my Verizon 4G LTE Smartphone ------ Original message------ From: Larry Pittman Date: Wed, Aug 17, 2016 10:58 AM To: rcobb@tampabay.rr.com; Subject:AR 25 woofers Hi Rick. I have some 610-365-1 surrounds I got from you. Recently picked up some AR25 speakers which have 8 in woofers. Did not see them listed per say on in your store. Would these be the correct surrounds to use? Thanks Larry Pittman I have used these same surrounds on Advent 8 in Heritage and Prodigy speakers. All my 18S's have these. I would be interested to investigate the Boston filled fillet surrounds. I have used this type on 2ax woofers.
  3. I agree with what michiganpat says. Here are some extra tweeters I acquired when collecting and restoring my 18S models. Looking for some Model 18 speakers from the ADD series and I am coming across different versions. The 18AU and 18J. Maybe one has the tweeter switch and one does not. Maybe the woofers are slightly different. They both appear to have the same tweeter and 6uf cap.
  4. Oh yes the AR 18S, now there is a subject dear to my heart. In fact these are my favorite small bookshelf speaker. Did you know there are are two different varieties of the 18S. The original version on top and the newer one on the bottom. Here are the differences I can see. The newer version is 1/2 in wider. Has a terminal cup instead of a standard spring strip and the plastic woofer ring is outbound instead of recessed like the original. They all come with the 5uf NPE cap, fiber fill instead of fiberglass, and vinyl covered cabinets. Why not drag all my 18S examples out. Two of each variety. The first thing I do is re-foam the woofers with surrounds supplied by Rick Cobb. I believe they are the correct foams. Replace the 5uf with 5.1uf Daytons. Replace the spring clips with binding post from Parts Express. I have the binding post terminal cups for the newer version, but haven't got around to it yet because it will require slightly larger holes and re-positioning the caps. Did I say I really like these speakers. I have a 18B and Rock Partner example. Have not run across the 18 model yet. Not interested in the the other versions. I like the way the 18S model has inline drivers.
  5. I shook hands with Bill Clinton in May, attended my friends Gay wedding in June. I am good with all that. Why does the conclusion of this thread tend to bother me? I guess Spensar doesn't have a picture of Henry Kloss hanging on his wall.
  6. I have been told I am smarter than I look. Had to look up the definition for incised. Pretty much what I thought, more or less engraved. Learned the hard way that some badges are surface printed and some are incised. Working on a pair of 4x,s, went to wet sand the badges and this is what happened. Wonderful. Now I am gun shy on wet sanding. I have used Brasso and polishing wheel on dremel tool. The 5 badges were wet sanded. The 2ax badges were Brasso and polishing wheel, and the 3a badges are untouched. Any ideas on how to clean up these original badges while we wait the here back from Spensar.
  7. These are defiantly not 3 or 3a speakers, wrong cabinet face. If the hardwood floor strips are 2-2/14 in wide I would say these are 4x speakers. If the flooring is wider they could be 2ax or 5 speakers. Hard to say because the tapering perspective of the photograph. There are folks here way more knowledgeable about this than myself. I am betting on 4x's.
  8. Hey I have got a pair of AR38S speakers tucked away in the basement that I re-foamed a couple years ago. If I remember correctly 10 in two ways that diffident sound too bad at all. A little bright. Somewhere I have new Solen caps for them. Maybe Ill dig them out and give another listen.
