  1. Kent, that list looks like a good way to tackle the cap replacement.

$9.50 for Mills !!!!!! Wow, they have doubled in price !

I have a few of the Mundorf resistors but have not used any (yet) so I can't comment. I do know of several people who have used them and no complaints.

Some may find these write ups on Peter Snell interesting.

  2. Snell made some fine speakers. One thing they were known for was bundling caps. This was for two reasons: (1) to reach a particular uF and (2) to attain a particular ESR (equivalent series resistance). You might find that the bundle of caps in one speaker do not match what's in the other.

Hello thank you for the information, thank you Roy for your proposal unfortunately I live in France. I managed to find a sample of allusol solder I don't know if you know.

My Machinery's Handbook was clear about high tin content being essential and not lead. Lead is good for plumbing/copper and a few other metals.

What is the ideal solder for old Ar2 3 tweeter rows? I tried kester 44 solder and I get poor results

The leads are probably aluminum and aluminum soldering works best with a high Tin content alloy, such as  Indalloy 121 (96.5Sn 3.5Ag, 221°C eutectic) or any of the "SAC alloys" (Tin-Silver-Copper or SnAgCu) like Ind256 (96.5Sn 3.0Ag 0.5Cu, 220°C).

Alcaps come in some good AR values; with 6, 8, 30, 40, and 80uF caps.  If you eventually try some, I'd love to hear about your impressions.

Getting harder to find the AR cap values used. The 6 is now a 5.7; the 8 is now an 8.2; the 30 is 31 and/or 33; and the 80 is 82.

I'll let you know if I get some and what I think. Of course it will be my opinion.

Perhaps you might want to recap one of each speaker with each option installed?  Then you can compare them side by side to check for obvious audible differences.

Great idea. I did this with my 91s.

Keep in mind the circuitry in the 91 midrange is different than the 90 and 9 UMR and is less 'finicky' .

David, I also own the AR2ax, these from '72 (therefore woofer with foam surround and 3/4 tw), they don't give me the same listening pleasure... the mid is too present and difficult to adjust to balance it, moreover the older AR2a are more efficient and easily adjustable precisely in the double cone mids to obtain a balanced sound (again from my impressions).
Currently the AR2a are stacked with a pair of Heathkit AS-2a (previously with a pair of AR2 and the stacking was already optimal with only the super tweeter of the AR2a!), the result is excellent.

    Impressive !

Thank you for your thoughts. I'll look around my area and see what's available.

    Here's my AR towers >

David If you want pre Teledyne speakers, you need to look for a pair of AR3...AR3a was born under Teledyne ownership!

If you are patient I would recommend a pair of less expensive AR2a (full Alnico), I have a pair of '63's which I have been listening to for many years, they have been in daily use ever since!! In my opinion (I currently have 28 pairs of ARs and 10 are always available for listening) they are probably the AR speakers I am most fond of.

Thank you for that info. I was under the impression that the development of the 3a was pre-Teledyne. Sales years per aphenos>AR-3A: 1967-1976

    What about the 2ax ?
