Glenn E
Hi all, a couple of questions. First, how does the AR25 stack up against other smaller AR models? Second, are the tweeters in the AR25 the same as in the AR6, 7, 8, 93 etc? They are listed as 1.25 inch cone type. Third, I need to replace stockings on pair of AR93s. Can anyone recommend a good supplier of stretchy grill cloth to match original? Many thanks.Glenn
JKent
Hi GlennIf the grille material on the AR93 is the same as the AR91 and virtually all speakers of that era, the cloth is very common. I found some in JoAnn's Fabric store but the mail-order places have it too. Look here for example: http://www.madisound...str=grill+cloth or http://www.parts-exp...CAT&srchCat=140 or http://www.amazon.co...e/dp/B004YDTMPS or http://www.amazon.co...4/ref=pd_cp_e_1Search the forum for AR25. According Michiganpat in one thread the 6, 7, 8 and 4xa used a front-wired version of the tweeter found in the 17/18, 8/18/28S 8/18/28B, rock partner, 93&94 (PART # 200038-0)Rlowe wrote “the AR25 used the 200014-3 Tweeter” so try doing a search for that part number. According to johnio, “the AR-18-b used AR tweeter #200034-0. Others who know this speaker say the tweeter used in the AR-18-b was essentially identical to the 200014-3.” He also wrote "My AR-18 tweeters are part number 200014-3. . . . My AR-18b tweeters are part number 200034-0, but the AR parts list gives their number as 200038-0. I think both numbers are correct."This should give some starting points for a search. Also--RoyC is doing a lot of research on using modern tweeters (HiVi in particular) as replacements for old ARs. Perhaps he will have some thoughts on this.Hope this helps.Kent
michiganpat
I'm a little confused where the AR25 fits in, it is a 2 way, came about sometime in the ADD era, with the same driver compliment as the 17 and 18. size wise, I *think* it's about the same size as the 17 (which is about the same size as the 4x/4xa). I believe it uses the same xover as the 17/18, with the woofer running full range, and a 6uf cap, with a 2 position switch with resistors for +/-3db settings an 0. that Roy Allison designed tweet is amongst my favorites. part number may have changed slightly, but the tweet was first introduced in front wired form in the 6,7,8, and 4xa, and continued rear wired in the 17/18, then into the verticals (93 and 94) and into the small S & B lines, through the late 90's in the Rock Partners....if you don't want to sew your 93's socks yourself, I believe Larry at Vintage-AR on ebay sells 93 and 94 socks already finished. HarryM
I picked up a 200038-0 tweeter as a replacement for one of my AR25 tweeters, part #1200014-3 and found it to not be a suitable replacement. It was very high and screechy.I don't know if there is something wrong with it but I do find 1200005-0 to be a good match. The AR 7 used both 1200014-3 and 1200005-0 and also used the same woofer. If I remember correctly the AR25 was a 25 year anniversary speaker. It is a good sounding speaker for a smaller room.If I can find enough of them I would use them for a surround sound system.
