KLH six

I bought this pair of KLH six, in good conditions. Very particular grills, I've never seen before. Anyone knows this grille version? They sounds excellent,I'm very satisfied, but perhaps they need caps replacement. Anyone knows the x-over schematic? Thank You, Adrian, Rome, Italy

Looks like you need two 2uF caps and one 8uF per speaker. According to the schematic, these are oil caps. If so you may not need to replace them.

I have never seen oil filled caps in KLH speakers, only in ARs. KLH often used the black and red PVC Callins caps, and they should always be replaced.

I would suggest taking a look at the resistors. KLH used 5 watt resistors in the Model Five (and others), and if that is what you have I recommend replacing them with 10 watt resistors because the 5w can overheat and burn. You would need two 3 ohm and one 7.5 ohm per speaker.

Also try searching in the KLH section for "Model Six" (in quotes). I got 81 hits. This thread shows a photo of the Model Six xo. It uses the evil black & red caps (replace!) and 7w resistors (probably fine).

Thank You Kent! I'm very satisfied by the model Six, to me, and in my room, it's a little bright on normal settings playing classical music, but on decrease settings it's one of the most musical speakers I've ever heard. Smooth but open, with "air" around the instruments, and has an excellent stage, wide and deep, very precise. As a longtime AR listener, I could say it has a better image than my AR 3 or my AR 3a. I'm saying an heresy? Perhaps, but the model six has another big chance, is a very sensitive speaker compares to AR 3. My little Dyna SCA 35 drives easily the model six, while is unable to drive AR 3. Best wishes, Adrian

Ah! Nice little amp. My first stereo was a Dyna ST-35 (the power amp section of the SCA-35), a KLH Eighteen tuner and a pair of headphones (later added the AR 4x speakers). The ST-35 was a real nice little tube amp. Sort of wish I still had it, but I can't complain. Bought it in 1969 for $40 USD (it was a kit) and sold it about 10 years ago for $400. Pretty good investment.

I assume you have replaced all of the electrolytic capacitors in your Dyna. If not, it's time.

I bought the Dyna SCA 35 three months ago, the seller told me he replaced all the electrolytic caps, but not tubes. My SCA 35 mounts the original Telefunken tubes, and he suggested me to replace with some NOS tubes. Here in Rome are many shops dedicated to NOS tubes like Amperex, GEC, Telefunken, Mullard, Siemens, but sometimes they're very expensive. I've found a complete set of Telefunken to the SCA 35 at 120,00 euros, but how to replace in the Dyna, and how to set the bias? I'm a novice of tubes amps, last time I heard a tube amp was in 1966, my father's Marantz 7 and 8b, and I was six-years old! Thank You, Kent. Adrian

Tubes last a long time. If the caps were replaced and the amp sounds good, I would not replace them.

If you can find someone with a tube tester, you could have the tubes checked. Testers are not perfect. I have seen bad tubes test "good", but the tester is a way to start.

12AX7s are common and the ones made in eastern Europe are inexpensive.

Is the shop in Rome selling all 8 tubes for 120 euro? That's about $165 USD or about $20 USD per tube. If they are NOS (NEW old stock) Telefunkens I'd say that is a good deal. Might be a good idea to get a set and hold on to them. BUT I really doubt those are NOS at that price.
