administrator
I am close to getting the new discussion forums online. Until the entire website is moved over to a new machine, you will need to access the discussion forums via an IP address instead of a domain name. When I am ready to make the switch I will post one last time here and then place notice on the main page of the website. Also, I am planning on improving the website navigation in advance of any database upgrade. I need ideas on how to best organize the information .. right now navigation through the AR section is not very intuitive. So .. should the main AR links be by series? This is perhaps the best way I can think of logistically. The main links would be the "original" models, such as the AR-3 "series", AR-9, AR-38, etc. and all items for derivitives would be located under these main links, including AR-9LSi, AR-38bxi, etc. Also, I think it's time I add a nice search feature .. Comment away!Mark
Guest
>should the main AR links be by series? <Well, I dunno. How would someone looking for information on an AR 17 or 14 find it if they didn't know about the 11 for instance? It almost seems like you'd have to list every speaker in the series. But then, it looks as though maybe you are the happy recipient of so much good AR information that you have all that information and it wouldn't be terribly burdensom to add it.Bret
Steve F
Mark,I tried to post this message Sunday night, but “a connection failure occurred.” I usually write my messages in Word first, then copy and paste. This time I didn’t, and Murphy reared his ugly head. GBNF. I’ll try to re-create it from memory:You might consider organizing by model, chronologically—The original, classic models (1954-1974):AR-1, 1w, 1x, 2, 2a, 2x, 2ax, 3, 3a, 3t, 3st, 3a Improved, 4, 4x, 4xa, 5, 6, 7, 8, LST, LST-2.The ADD/Truth in Listening models (1975-1978):10pi, 11, 12, 14, 15, 16, 17, 18, MST The Verticals/High Tech Series (1978-1981):9, 90, 91, 92, 93, 94The orphan/anniversary models (1979, 1984):25, 30 bookshelf, 30 floorstanderThe ‘un-classic’ series, including s, B, BX, Bxi (1981-1987):9L, LS, 98L, LS, 78LS, 58, 48, 38, 28, 18The Connoisseur Series (1985-1988):20, 30 (different than the ‘orphan’ 30 above), 35t, 40, 40t, 50, 50t, subwooferThe Magic Speakers (1986-1988):MGC-1, MGC-2The PartnersThe TSW series (1987-1990):100B, 105, 115P, 110, 210, 310, 315, 410, 415, 510, 610, 710, 810, 910 (and all the various “A” models) I’d stop after the TSW’s. Everything that followed (The Spirit series, etc.) has been pretty forgettable, and clearly bears no resemblance to the AR we all knew and loved.I’d also have a way to access the site by topic, since there is an incredible collective reservoir of knowledge and experience among the Forum members. Topics should include:- Surround replacement- Crossover re-build- Replacing level controls- Cabinet repair/refinishing- Grille cloth replacement- Identification and sourcing of replacement drivers- Repair and refurbishing vendors (phone numbers, e-mails, addresses, etc. of AB Tech, Layne, Bill Miller, etc.)Well, those are some of my off-the-top-of-my-head thoughts.Steve F

ar_pro
Excellent format, Steve...it's just what I'd like to see if I was unfamiliar with vintage AR products, and trying to find well-organized information. First-rate!
ToastedAlmond
My computer skills leave a lot to be desired. I didn't even understand the question until Steve answered it (and obviously nailed it on the first try). So.....I want what Steve wants! I just want to be able to stay in touch with the guys, especially Steve, Tom, and Ken. Listening to those guys gives me hope that one day, I can be more than just a pretty face (It's like a curse I tell you!). George
Guest
That's a perfect solution, Steve. Exactly what I would have suggested if I'd been smart enough and known all the models. ;-)Bret

It's a good resource index, and puts each series in perspective. We should build on this.--Tom Tyson

administrator
Steve:Do you have the years of manufacture of the AR303 series? I just put the MGC area together .. thanks to a visitor from Hong Kong, we should have the MGC-2 manual soon. Also doing some minor fixes here and there this morning.Mark
Steve F
Mark,The 303, 302, etc. models were introduced in early 1995. I believe they were in production for about 3 years, although they continued to be available as close-out/special buys for a while after that. They created quite a stir at CES in 1995 because AR had "reintroduced the AR-3a!" The great Home Theater magazine review was in May 1995, and, of course, the Tom Tyson-Julian Hirsch 3a-303 collaboration was around then also.Steve F. administrator
I have made significant progress this morning on the AR section. Comments welcome on how it is coming together! Now that we have some sense of organization, we can concentrate on getting some of the "missing" information online.Once the basic layout is done this will be a big relief .. Then I can get back to posting new material.Mark
