6sigma
Today I photographed one of my long-idled Advent speakers. I'm the original owner and have the boxes, docs and all the components are originals. These were purchased in 1976 and have never been refoamed or tweaked in any way. The photos clearly show the cracks in the existing surrounds! My photography isn't good, but the photos show the original tags stapled to the back of the cabinets as well as some (fuzzy) close-ups of the tweeters. Are these photos (http://www.flickr.com/photos/rodentregatta...57624334054751/) sufficient for determining the best refoaming kit to use? If so, which one and from whom? Are there other things that should be done to a pair of Advents that have never been "opened" for any type of repair or change? Thanks to any and all who are willing to comment/advise! I have a pair awaiting refoaming but have not had the nerve to start yet. Gluing to the BACK of the Masonite ring looks like a real PITA compared to the refoam jobs I've done on AR speakers. If you are not experienced with refoaming you may want to consider having a pro do it (Carl or Millersound).http://www.classicloudspeakerservices.com/http://www.millersound.net/about.htmcheck out this thread:http://www.audiokarma.org/forums/showthread.php?t=118404And here is a thread I started a year ago. Stil haven't done the work, but some info here (thanks PeteB)http://www.classicspeakerpages.net/IP.Boar...6&st=0&I buy all of my surround kits from M_Sound. The kits are very complete, instructions are good and email support is available.http://cgi.ebay.com/Classic-LARGE-Advent-1...=item3cae7383feYou could also buy from Vintage AR--a reputable sellerhttp://cgi.ebay.com/LARGE-ADVENT-ORIGINAL-...=item25596e72f5Pete B has a page devoted to the OLAhttp://baselaudiolab.com/ADVENT_LA_XO.htmlPete has a lot of ideas on how to improve the Advent crossovers, but just replacing the caps with some good film caps would be a good minimal upgrade.Good luckKent

I would also replace the elctrolytic capacitors (either two 16uF or an 8uF and 16uF) with a new 8uF in the tweeter circuit and a 16uF in the woofer circuit. I went with Speakerworks.com kits, and found plenty of advice on the internet about how to clean, align, and reglue foams to my Advents. Simplyspeakers.com sells 'Advent refoam kits' also. I just picked up another pair of orginal large Advents that need refoaming and when they are done I'll recap them and use them stacked with the originals. JKent
btw--if you decide not totackle the job yourself, I just got a quote from Bill LeGall at Millersound: $70 the pair, plus shipping. He does great work, and fast too. If you do it yourself, I'll stick with my MSound recommendation. His kits feature a Deep Roll Surround that allows better throw and gives improved bass. And the DIY kit is 1/3 the cost of having a pro do it. Don't just buy a generic 10" foam kit. This one is for the OLA:http://cgi.ebay.com/Classic-LARGE-Advent-1...=item3cae7383fe
