Butyl Latex Coating for A1 and A2 Woofers and Mid's

I have refoamed a pair on A'1 and a pair of A'2. Additionally I have verified X-over capacitor values: the most of them were out of specs (both value and ESR). I have replaced all X-over capacitor. Final result is acoustically perfect. To perfectly conclude the restoration I still miss the re-coating of the woofers (I had to remove coating due to 30 years accumulated dust). I participate to other forums and I received various almost exotic suggestion (shoe polish is just one example). I do not look for aesthetic solutions. I know that the original coating was "butyl latex" based. LORD has discontinued BL-100 production, as well Locktite did about its product. I look exlusively for butyl based material due to its specific chemical mechanical characteristics: UV-protection, very long term soft elasticity, right mechanical dumping (who knows what was in Roy's mind when he decided to use it !!!). I found butyl based sealants (Saratoga brand) but they are diluished with solvents and I fear that solvent will be aggressive aginst the foam (which I want to coat too). Does somebody know the commercial brand of pure butyl latex, possibly findable on EU market? Thanks in advance, Roberto

Welcome Roberto

You may find this thread instructive:

The Permatex product used on cloth surrounds should NOT be used on foam, however. Something like "wet look" sold by partsexpress may be appropriate:

Or you could use the water-based "speaker repair glue" sold by partsexpress and many others. Thin it to the consistency of skim milk and paint on 1 or 2 coats (no more)

Here is info on using the white glue:

I suggest you read this page for cautions regarding butyl adhesive:

Hope some of this is helpful, but I do not know where to shop in Europe ;)

Good luck!

Kent

I am thinking of trying "The Wet Look" on my Allison One Woofers I recently refoamed. When cleaning up the original I used luke warm water to remove the decades of gunk that accumulated on them. I figure spraying mainly the surrounds to try to recreate Roy's configuration.

Will let you all know soon!

Nice job on the surrounds YanK! Interesting, I never noticed that "wet look" on the woofers of my Allison Fours (no longer have them) :(

but if you look at the RA Labs (Roy Allison Labs) Mini Reference speakers in this thread, I think you will see that Roy used that wet look on his later speakers:

When I first saw the wet look on the RA speakers I thought it had been applied by a previous owner, but one CSP member set me straight: The black coating was original.

good luck with your project!

So this thread and the remanents of tropical storm Hanna get me to thinking it is about time to dust off the One's and bring them up to the listening room (anchored by a cherry Yamaha ca-2010 125 watt/ch integrated) and I find one of the mids tinsel leads pulled off! ;)

Second pair of speakers that have had interaction with one of my 4 cats! Now I have to find me a new one! I also contacted Millersound since they are local to me as well. I will be placing a WTB link here (and AK) as well.
