Steve Strac
Hello, Appreciating some help to understand the difference between these various models of Acoustic Research AR-18 speakers: AR-18, AR-18-S, AR-18-J, AR-18-B. And are there any other variants? Thanks so much! Steve / New York
nefertem
Steve the original AR 18 used a 8 in woofer paper cone and tweeters similar to other models AR 94 and 93 the 18b that I have in my living room setup uses a 6.5 polypropylene woofer and tweeters
AR55
Actually, the AR-18, AR-18s & AR-18B are somewhat different in appearance but are basically the same speaker. Correction - the AR-18J is identical to the original AR-18. They all have 8" paper cone woofers & 1.25" cone tweeters. The AR18 was introduced in 1977. It had a foam grille and a walnut grain, vinyl clad cabinet (16.5x9.625x6.25). It also had a high-level switch to boost/cut the tweeter. The AR-18s was introduced in 1981. It had a cloth grille and a walnut grain, vinyl clad cabinet (16.5x9.635x6.5). No controls were provided. The AR-18B was introduced in 1983. It had a cloth grille and a walnut grain, vinyl clad cabinet (17x10.5x6.25). No controls were provided. Below is a picture of an AR-28B and an AR-17. The AR-18B & AR-18 closely resemble them. Edited January 21, 2023 by AR55 Added Photos of AR-28B & AR-17 & corrected AR-18J reference.
