  1. Refinished the cabinets, redid the crossover with all new caps and resistors, sealed surrounds on woofer and mids with roycs sealer then tested it out to make sure it was all working and finally placed them back in with new foam surrounds. Only thing not original model 5 tweeters had to go for a pair from the model6/20 for now if i ever find originals will swap them out but for now sounds amazing with ny Hitachi SR-2000, looking to add a tube amp will save up maybe for McIntosh mc275 to give these guys the power they really crave heard them in its unrepaired form on some model 9s and loved the sound even without tweeters, one missing mid and no reseal.
  2. Still looking if anyone has a pair they willing to sell.
  3. Anyone have experience changing out the binding post on these speakers? I just realized the ones i bought are missing their terminal nuts i could buy some new ones on ebay for a few bucks each but am considering upgrading as i dont like having exposed speaker wire sitting out that can oxidize over time.
  4. Im not sure if its a very visually appreciable thing more so just theoretical thoughts from my woodworking days. I guess the more appreciable factor is seen when you drill into a new particle board vs some these very old speakers and they tend to be softer/easier to drill through/easily chip/break.
  5. Nice thanks for the input appreciate it!
  6. I have some experience with sound deadening in car audio and how it helps keep the speaker reproducing sounds more accurately by reducing the resonance of the surrounding material the speaker is mounted to. In all my reading related to particle board over time it tends to expand from moisture cycles throughout the years thus making it resonate more. Would adding sound deadening to the baffle be beneficial in returning this resonance back toward baseline? i have some leftover sound deadening material from when i did my car doors and trunk silver metallic face with black tarry rubber layer, would it be a good idea to use that? A few patches around the woofer and midranges possibly the tweeters in a klh model 5?
  7. Looking for a pair or even one of klh 5 tweeters hear its the same in the 12 or 23 so those would do too. thanks!
  8. How do the 17s sound compared to the originals? Any noticeable difference? Just got a pair of 5s that use the same tweeter was told by one the members its basically the same but since you just did it would like your opinion.
  9. so i finally got lucky and found a pair of klh model 5s for 100 bucks! Unfortunately both tweeters were “dead” and one midrange looks like it bottomed out or burned out as it doesnt even move when i push on the woofer. I bought this knowing these things but i thought hey the auction site has some midranges and tweeters here and there ill bide my time. Bought a midrange still waiting for it to arrive, bought what i thought were model 5 tweeters turns our they were mislabeled as klh 5 when they are prob model 6(all black with plates of equal thickness around the magnet. So after getting my hopes crushed as i should have known from the black painted faces it wasnt a model 5 it is just recently i learned this as i was researching re capping projects.Long story short i decided to pull apart and mess with the model 5 tweeters i do have finding out that they can sometimes be repaired thus i opened off the grills and found both tweeters to have a broken wire unfortunately one seems like maybe 2 break one above and one below the cone as it didnt test out(battery test) but the other did sadly the wire broke right where the glue next to the dome is barely enough wire to test it but i heard it crackle so i think it works but i dont have that level of skill i think to fix the wire(spent like 2 days already trying) so anyone know how i could possibly fix this? Also if anyone is near jersey city/nyc with the skills to repair this please let me know as well if i cant fix it im open to seeing if someone else can.
