  1. That's not a tear in the dome.  It's various layers of material, attached to the protective mesh, in front of the actual dome.  I assume these materials act as damping, and help with dispersion?  The black material, seen through that tear, is the dome itself, underneath the layers.

Also, I just picked up a pair of AR-5's.  When I start a refurb on them, I'll definitely check my domes, to see if they match your mids?  Just to be sure...

I have a fully restored set of AR TSW-910's and the tweeters finally blew.  Does anyone have a good suggestion for a replacement for them?

Fully restored inside and out?  New capacitors too?  If so, it's a little odd that both tweeters would simultaneously fail.  Maybe you need to test the driving amp too.  Maybe it's exhibiting high DC offset?

I wasn't sure, I saw they were all different AWG 20, 16, 14...... Didn't know if that made a difference or not ? Thanks

Since the coil is for a dome midrange, any of these gauges should be fine.  If for a bass circuit, a larger gauge is preferable, as that also increases power handling capability.

  4. Spare parts prices are insane at present.  It doesn't seem to have topped out either.  Even woofers and mids, still needing a refoam, are bringing high dollar.  Or at least sellers are asking top dollar.

Parts are scarce too.  I'm looking for a single AR92 woofer, and can't find one.  And when you find something that might work, everyone expects to receive eBay asking prices.  And as Arken stated, "no guarantee if they're any good"?  A big risk, with potentially no reward.

What differences should I be looking for here as mine are currently in progress?

    Roger

The 91 has 5 caps.  Four, 8, 24, 40, and 100uf in value.  The 92 only has four capacitors; 4, 8, 24, and 80uf.  One coil difference in value too, but that's not so obvious.

    Hi Stimpy.

You got a winner in the 58s.   Hope you enjoy them!

Yea, i had a broken terminal on one cab, so i capped the 91 boards..........better connectors.    Nothing wrong with 58 board, just easier for me

Thanks!  I'm definitely enjoying my 58S speakers.  Much more than I anticipated.  So much so, that I bought a set of AR91 crossover boards too, as a mod.  Just putting together another cap order for those.

By the way, I am driving them with a Conrad-Johnson Sonographe SA-400 amp and SA26 preamp.  rated at 400 watts/channel at 4 ohms.  Damn good amp and pre-amp in my opinion.

I have a Sonographe SG-3 turntable.  It's very good, for a modest table.  It made me lust after your SA26 and SA-400 gear.  That's a nice combo.

Oh, congratulations on the AR9s too.  Awesome speakers.  I hope you sort them out?

As to the recap, when redoing my AR90 crossovers, I tested a recapped crossover against a stock crossover.  The differences were very pronounced.  Cleaner, clearer, smoother with better presence.  They're not finished yet, since I'm refurbing the cabinets too.  But I hope I hear increased resolution in the lower mids and bass as well.  I used Mundorf polys for the recap.

    Im waiting as well.

Focusing on what arsurround said, umr cap.     The 9's are truely the best i have, but the 3 way has its strong points as well.      You will love the ar9, if you have the room for it.

Do you own a 3a?    For comparison sake?

    Off topic.

Harry, your AR90 cabinets, on eBay, are making me crazy!  I want them, but have no way to get them!  Crap.

    On topic.

The AR UMR domes are a great driver.  Well worth a little recap love, and good front end electronics.

The 9's will be ALL NPE caps except for Vishay 1837 bypass caps on the tweeter and UMR npe's

I've decided to use film in the 90's. Clarity CSA on the tweeter and UMR.

No love for the LMR?  There's a series cap on those too.  So, throw a Vishay in there as well.

I'm looking forward to your AR90-ClarityCap impressions (since I live vicariously through others).  I still need to investigate why the Clarity's didn't show-me-the-love, on my AR58S speakers?  Could the 8.0uF mylar that I also used, have sucked the life out of the upper mids?

  10. Thanks so much for the reply Tom.  That's invaluable information.  Plus, it just further strengthens the knowledge of how much time and effort Acoustic Research put into music, and the promotion of good sound.  Fifteen years running that sound room.  Mind boggling.

That picture is incredible too!  Two AR-3's feeding a space that large is mind blowing.  Now, I want to try tube amps on my AR's.  And were AR's and tube amps often paired together?  Recommended by AR too?

  11. The higher in frequency, a large driver is expected to perform, the more directional said driver will become.  The more it 'beams', the worse dispersion becomes, and more extreme toe in will be required, to aim the woofer, for proper balance.  So, were the shifting crossover points, just a simple experiment, to find a sweet spot, where the 12" woofer didn't 'beam' at the top of it's pass band?
