"Classic" Snells

I have my own hand drawn version made during a rebuild of the upper section. It does not include the woofer section. Anyone interested?

Was puzzled to see no reference to Snell in the Library section. I thought there was some stuff back in the old site.

Sure Carl, whatever you have I'd like to take a look.

Some interesting reviews of the Type A, I always liked this speaker because

it was innovative, not just another simple box type speaker:

History at the company site:

I've attached some stuff IMO belongs in the library. Schematics, pictures and a chronological history by model (can't vouch for accuracy) that was available for downloading from the oroginal CSP site. :(

Thanks Carl that is a start. Did you happen to note the mid and tweeter

model numbers?

How did you determine that they are 4 ohms, did you happen to

measure the DCR of the drivers?

Interesting that he uses a third order electrical network on the tweeter.

Mid is roughly first order electrical high pass with impedance compensation

on the driver for Fc resonance, 2nd order lowpass electrical. Some sort of

series trap there also that doesn't look like it does much since it is shunted

by a low resistance.

Anyone else have the rest of the schematic for the woofer section?

I may have measured the drivers but can't remember. That was 5 yrs ago. The speaker is rated at 4 ohms as noted in the copy of the Model A owner's manual which should also be in the library. Didn't note the model numbers of the drivers.

[i hope Mark reads this]

True, the Type A's are rated 4 ohm overall, but that doesn't necessarily mean that the individual drivers are 4 ohm, does it?

There's got to be someone out there w/ a pair of cherry Type A's who could measure the DC resistance of the individual drivers.

Attached is image of a mid in my Snell Type A.

DC resistance reads 6.2 ohms. Looks like a Philips AD5060 at 8 ohms then. I've got a pair coming (I think) that I found on eBay.

It might be a good idea to include serial numbers in order to detect any changes in drivers during the lifespan of a given model. My Type A's are serial numbers 521 (left) and 522 (right).

Hope this helps the data base.

Regarding the Tweeters: I'm planning on replacing the tweeters w/ a close equivalent from Audax; the TW025A10 (4 ohm). The tweeters in mine are totally missing and everyone seems to think they were 4 ohm. But I'd sure feel better if someone would test the DC on an original and confirm that for me.

i have been a proud owner of the snell type A2 for the past 19 years.its a very rare speaker here in the philippines.as far as i know there is one pair of A1 and my A2. this speakers needs a lot of power.i was using a phase linear model 700c it had 450 w/ channel it did not match it was bright & etched no bass nor body. but w/regards to tube amplification i was able to drive it using a HK citation 2 which i borrowed from a friend. the sound was magical but w/ limited loudness.im currently using the foll. amps the type a2 ARC D79B biamped using 2 D79Bs w/ ARC EC 21 crossover 300hz 6db cut off/slope.i also use an ARC D250 markII servo to drive them full range.so as you can see this amp needs a lot of power probably 150 watts preferrably high power tube amps.have not tried to use high current transistor amps like krell,ml,etc on this speakers.hope this answers your question.

Hey 3.2 mondial, want to show off your nice Snell Type A-ll to a fellow audio nut? You see, I just bought a pair in the States but will have to stay here in Makati until late October.

It would be nice to meet a fellow Filipino audio fan and talk about amps, speakers, etc., not about chicks, lol!
