KLH Twenty binding posts

Joel

Recommended Posts

I picked up a pair of KLH Twenty's today for $15 at a local thrift store. They are all original, so they will need new caps at least. In spite of the fact that the tweeters don't work, they sound remarkably good. I'm hoping a recap will fix the tweeters.

My question is about the RCA jacks in the back. I would lean towards leaving them, but as you can see in the picture, one is missing just leaving bare wires. How would binding post be installed in the cabinet? Would I need to make new holes in the wood, or go through the metal plate? Anyone with pictures would help a lot.

Thanks.

Hey Joel

Some would argue that you should keep the speakers original, for collector value. I disagree regarding the 20s. They're not that collectible and the RCA jacks are not great terminals. I suggest ordering some terminal cups when you order the caps. Be sure to plug up the holes from the RCA jacks to maintain an airtight seal.

These are nice and they're cheap but you have to drill a 4-1/2" hole, and the spacing is not standard: http://www.parts-express.com/pe/showdetl.cfm?partnumber=269-103

These are real nice and require a 2-7/8" hole: http://www.parts-express.com/pe/showdetl.cfm?partnumber=260-283

You could probably install binding posts directly through the metal plate IF IF IF you are sure to use the insulated kind that isolate the metal from the posts. Something like this: http://www.apexjr.com/images/Bposts1.jpg

Or if you prefer, install binding posts with long shafts directly through the wood. Use 3/4" spacing. http://www.madisoundspeakerstore.com/yung-binding-posts/posts-hg-postb-binding-post-black/

The crossover is identical to the Seventeen, so if you need a schematic just look for the Seventeen.

Nice speakers. Essentially identical to the highly-regarded Seventeen, but 4 ohm (make sure your amp is rated for 4 ohm).

Good luck. Any other questions you know where to find us ;)

Hi Kent,

Thanks for the info. I think I know what to do now. I ordered the posts with the long shafts from Madisound. It looks like the easiest option. I'll let you know how it goes.

The surrounds need doping, but I think I can find the source by searching here.

Thanks.

I just found out that the Vintage-AR ebay store is "currently away". Does anyone know for how long, or if there is another source for the cloth surround dope?

The cloth surround dope is made for Vintage AR by our own RoyC. Send him a PM and he can supply it to you at a wholesale price: http://www.classicspeakerpages.net/IP.Board/index.php?showuser=101150
