ironlake
Both woofers in my 3as have the original cone with the extra material by the dust cap but one has the cloth surround and the other one has a foam surround that was just replaced. Was this woofer made up of remaining cones before the latter non extra foam around the dust cap. Also which magnet would it have, alnico or ceramic. Also which magnet would it have, alnico or ceramic. If both magnets are the same as the one with the cloth surround woofer, they are alnico. If that is the case, your foam surround woofer probably had its original cloth surround replaced with foam at a later date. Photos would be helpful.Roy
ironlake
When ar replaced the magnets in the 3a,s was the magnetic strength or flux the same between the two, and was there any difference in sound between the two?
ironlake
The magnet on the woofer with the ceramic magnet has the foam surround and according to the guy that did the beautiful restoration had the ceramic magnet and rotton foam surround and had simply speakers refoam them. It must have been afew left over original cones when the frames with the new magnet where started to be used.I know I have an orignal tonka toy 1957 truck with a 56 cab and according to a fellow that worked at the plant where they where made said they used up the old cabs on the new body to get rid of them. RoyC
The earliest ceramic magnet/foam surround 3a woofers did have a damping ring around the dust cap, so you probably have this transitional woofer. There was a slight response difference between the alnico and ceramic magnet versions, and the woofer crossover inductor was changed from AR's #7 coil (1.88mh) to #9 (2.95mh) about the time the ceramic magnet woofer showed up.Roy
