Binding Post Upgrade to Banana Plug

Has anyone upgraded the speaker binding post to accept banana plugs for convenience and speed when switching speaker leads? If so, what product were you able to find that works well? Thanks.

I have the original large Advents with the masonite ring which I recently replaced with new foam surrounds.

Hi Dreamer and Welcome to the CSP :D

I have upgraded to binding posts when I refurbished a pair of KLH Model Twenty speakers. These were originally equipped with RCA jacks. A terminal cup like this one works well

You just drill a 2-5/8" hole with a hole saw and pop it in place.

For the Advents you don't need the cup, just a couple of 5-way binding posts like these:

or these:

There are lots of varieties and lots of prices. Just go to Parts Express, Madisound, or whatever supplier and type in "binding posts." You don't need the extra long threaded part because you are only going through 1/8" Masonite on the Advents.

I have a pair of original large Advents myself, awaiting upgrade. I do NOT plan to replace the terminals. They work very well. Just put #6 ring terminals on your speaker wire. OTOH, if you are changing speakers frequently for whatever reason, the binding posts make sense.

Hi Kent

When I first saw this topic posted, I was thinking, he could use a dual gold plated banana jack set.

In passing the back of a Walnut veneered LA in my basement, I noticed the separate terminals separated by the toggle switch.

There goes that idea.

There certainly is quite a selection of individual connectors.

The cup arrangement looks like a good idea, for speakers with no switches.

A tale of binding post woe.....

I just finished upgrading a pair of KLH-23 speakers. Among the improvments was installation of a pair of solid copper short Cardas CCBP posts in the original post hole locations. I had to drill them out to 1/2 inch dia. That was the easy part. The Cardas design calls for a locking plate with 3/4 inch centers that locks each post in place. However, the customer insisted on no plate and installing the posts in the existing locations.

This was definitely not a good idea. The Cardas posts simply do not mount well thru a thin, sheet metal plate. I got them in and tightened best I could after altering their SBP1 washer. I found later that if you overtighten a connector spade or wire to the posts with the external nut, it binds and when you try to loosen it, the who post starts to rotate. Not a good situation. So steer away from Cardas post installs thru a thin sheet metal plate in existing holes. A second problem with these posts is the plastic washers that come with them. The large, machined posts are a huge heat sink so there's a huge risk of softening up or, even melting the plastic washers. After calling them to complain, they suggested a jeweler's torch and sent me another set of posts for free. Who's got a jeweler's torch!

I've got another pair of speakers from the same customer (Large Advents) who wanted the same post install. I refused.
