Loudspeaker enclosure material

I was disappointed to find that my British made AR5s use veneered chipboard for the sides top and bottom of the enclosure whereas the baffles are un-veneered. The only reason for this can be cost. I can't think of any sonic advantages at all.

So, I'm thinking I'll make new enclosures. What was used originally; Birch ply or Marine ply ?

Early ARs used cabinets made of fairly ordinary furniture/cabinet plywood. Later models changed to medium density particle board, which is denser and sonically less resonant than plywood.

Hi Chaps,

Thanks for the replies. This is such an informative site !

So, it looks like inch thick Marine Ply with a brace in or MDF or HDF without.

Jolly.
