Just picked up the parted out cabinets from Seattle. they are in vary nice shape. shame they were parted, but they will be saved. on with the interesting part both shipped same day 5 7 73 one has ply front and back other has ply front mdf back. the interesting part is that the numbers ar 65992 and 65843 the 843 had the mdf back and it was made before the other one that has a ply back. This has been talked about before. they had parts and made cabinets. but this time we have numbers and dates.

Dear “roundsound”, In regards to my newly bought, used woofers.

I must admit, I have been a sound and raw speaker ‘freak’ since I was 8 years old or so, back in Brooklyn in 1958. I’d always be hunting for them in the street. You can blame my father for that, he always loved music and the means to electronically reproduce it with tubes and with ‘electro-controlled’ speakers, as they made in the 1930’s and 40’s. This is all we had for audio besides a 50’s TV, in the 50’s. He was a major ‘tinker-er’ of old tube radios and speakers. He would take me looking for just the right drug store or where ever he could, to find a tube testing ‘public machine’ that was popular for public use. I watched him for hours switching tubes and wires and stuff on old radios and TV’s.

When I first got my AR-3a’s in 1972, I couldn’t believe their quality compared to the several ‘home-made’ enclosures I had devised from 1966 to ’72. I often dreamt of getting as many raw AR 12 inch woofers as I could and making my own ‘super-bass’ box. Now over 30 years later I am able to do similar projects and for not much money. No, I haven’t built a ‘super-bass’ box yet.

Regarding your question; well, ‘pal-o-mine’, I just received by FedX, the very same woofers that were so mercilessly torn out of ‘your’ newly acquired ‘3a’ enclosures that you bought on ebay and as I did these very same ‘parted-out’ woofers. How often does something like this ever happen? And as far as vintage AR woofers go, they’re beautiful! They were made in ‘Oct.1972. Of course they need to be re-foamed. After nearly a half hour of unpacking the two 12inchers (the seller really packed these mothers, heavily), I cleaned them off of the little pieces of broken ‘foam-peanuts’ and gave them the ol’ 1.5 volt battery test. Bingo! The cones moved, signifying the voice coil isn’t blown.

I won’t know if their VC rubs until I ‘re-foam’ them and that may be at some other time, although the spider seemed level. I’ve got too much restoring work ahead of me with my present systems being ‘work-in-progress’ at all times.

And no, sorry I’m not parting with these 2 woofers, but can we still be friends? I’ve waited for years, and now I have just 2 spare working woofers and they’re staying with me forever! Ah-ha-ha –ha-a….(Frank, short for Frankenstein). There is a slight chance I may make one into a new lavish and beautiful looking head-dress for Easter, and then maybe if it looks attractive I may patent the design and be a big fashion name here in NYC, isn’t that what life’s about, celebrity? But then again I did promise a lovely millinery delight to Vern first, something in pink with tulips around the brim, I mean cone basket! You’ll have to get in line after him, sorry. I will promise to contact you if I run into any others though, maybe do battle on ebay together, or not! And then, if I like the newer ones better, maybe then we’ll trade. That’s big of me, don’cha think? Maybe act like the present world’s norm ,I’ll hold these woofers hostage from you….

I will say this; those cabinets looked pretty darn good on the web, that ‘you’ got there, pal-o-mine. And I bet you got them for a song? I wanted them too, but the seller wasn’t shipping. You wouldn’t wanna sell those, would ya? I’m not sure I really need though, I’m getting’ greedy here with all this stuff I’ve surrounded myself in.

You understand don’t you, that because we now share ‘organs’ or ‘body parts’ if you will, in a way of speaking certainly, we’re kind ‘a related. I not going to include you in my ‘will’ though, so forget these woofers pal.

*Your new relative , Frank Marsi

P.S. I now presently own either in an enclosure and working, or with a burnt VC in a cardboard box, or as a ‘used spare in need of repair’, a total of twelve AR, 1972-3 twelve-inch woofers. DO you have any idea of how content I feel about something so almost meaninglessly material as that?

No I don’t feel that I’m ‘shallow’, AR bass is too deep for those kinds of feelings. But I do feel somewhat brutally greedy though. And guess what?… I’m loving it!

Oh, “Great Genie”, please forgive me for my sins.

*just joking, good gosh!
