owlsplace
I'm going to ask the guy who restores my Marantz.Reading between your lines you say that it is not dirt but oxidation that is the issue, which means cleaning them with a brush and so.Yes, the oxidation acts like an insulator so it needs to go to bare metal to make a good contact. The pots are made up of a coiled resistance wire, a contact plate and a wiper that connect the first two. Depending on environment the pots range from slightly tarnished to severely pitted with verdigris from the brass rivets, wiper and contact plate once the silver plating is compromised. I'm sure RoyC has seen the full spectrum and there are photos in different threads. If the pitting is too severe the pots will not work properly regardless of how clean you get them.Roger
