AR-3a and Tube amps

Hi everyone,

I've got a question for the experts here. I currently use a NAD C350 integrated amp (60 watts/channel/rms) to drive my 3a's. No complaints at all, but have been thinking about getting back into tubes. I don't really want to go the vintage route, for a number of reasons, among them are:

1. Acquiring a quality vintage pre-amp/amp or integrated. I don't want to use eBay/Audiogon because I can't see/test before I buy. There's not very much used vintage tube equipment here in the local area.

2. The cost of restoring a vintage component from a safety and sonics point of view. I can solder well, and can read a schematic ok, but I don't have the time or expertise to do a restoration on a vintage piece. That means sending it out to a repair shop.

3. The idea of a new warranty is very appealing to me.

So, I'd like your opinion on new equipment. I have a budget in the $1000 - $1300 range, and was looking at units like the Jolida JD 502B, which is a push-pull amp using 2 pairs of 6550 or KT88 tubes, and puts out 60 watts rms/channel into 8 or 4 ohms. This particular amp has both 8 and 4 ohm taps. This is just one example of several integrated amps like this. Would an amp like this drive the 3a's well? There's a link below to look at.

Anyone else using their 3a's with new or recent vintage tube amplification, that can tell me of their experiences?

I appreciate your help.

Regards,

Larry

http://www.curcioaudio.com/mqdes_3.htm These amps are supposed to be really good! I believe that you can get them pre assembled instead of a kit. These are based on the original dynacos. They are 100 watt monoblocks. As far as preamps go, this AVA preamp is also a based on the old dynaco pas preamps. http://www.avahifi.com/root/equipment/prea...nce_five_sl.htm

Go to www.klipsch.com and click on the 'forum' link. Hang around the '2-channel forum' awhile and ask questions. More than likely there is someone in your area that will demo an amp for you with your speakers. Careful, you'll find lots of nice helpful people there. And a few that will be able to rebuild a vintage amp, if you decide to go that route.

Boy I'm glad everything's back to normal here! Still haven't restored my 11's.

Hello Larry. Contact Craig at NOSValves.com for information about almost any tube amp, or for service. Craig is a good guy that is reasonable, should you need him, and loves to talk tube amps. Don't call him when you're short on time! ;^) . Good luck to you.
