Villchur's legacy

Most of the AR community knows that Villchur left speaker research and devoted his time to the development of hearing aids. He proposed two radically new design ideas: multi-channels and the use of volume compression in channels. It is also known that he sarted Resound hearing aid company, because none of the firms of that day would accept his design ideas. Today, Villchur's two design concepts are incorporated in all hearing aids.

Friday, my audiologist told me that there is yet one more unrecognized tribute to Villchur's legacy; the purchase of Resound by Danavox resulted in a name change. After Great Nordic, the parent company of Danavox, purchased Resound they changed its name from Danavox to Resound; Mr. Villchur would have been pleased.

Cheers, John

ReSound was a small company located in California when it introduced the first hearing aid using Villchur's multichannel compression. It sounds unlikely that Villchur would have started a new company 3000 miles from home.

Edit: ReSound's website says that ReSound was founded in 1984 by Rodney Perkins, a Stanford University professor of surgery.

Villchur was a smart businessman. Many of his customers for hearing aids were probaby people who spent time at live rock concerts listening to A-7s at ear shattering levels. Had they been home instead listening to AR3s playing classical or jazz music at more reasonable levels they wouldn't have needed hearing aids. One way or the other he got you at a customer sooner or later.
