AR 303 rubber surrounds

Hi The good 'ole Dynaco 25 model had rubber surrounds (late '69 - '75 ERA ) I see no deterioration at all in mine. Probably the problem with foam was not known untill '80 or so - still some expensive speakers still use int -- Bose 901 - 9 small speakers in each cabinet - do they still use the cheesy foam ? ?

At least to some extent AR recognized and corrected the problem. Thou you might say that 15 or 20 years of designed 'lifetime' is O.K.. Except to the 'fans '.

Modern synthetic rubber surrounds should last longer than the useful life of the woofer's other moving parts [cone, spider]. "Natural" rubber surrounds or those made from a blend will have a more limited lifespan, maybe 25-30 years. I've already started to see a lot of rubber surrounds from some mid-70's drivers [Phillips, KEF] starting to harden and crack.
