Just curious, Are the dynaco A40's the model that has a single driver but the tweeter is futher away from driver higher up on cabinent ? Just trying to varify a model.

I thought they might be the A35's but i saw a pic of the A35 and it shows the tweeter much lower simular to the A 25.

Replacing the caps in a pair of dynaco A-25s gives them the same 3db of higher efficiancy ?

I dont own a pair of A40s but 2 pairs of A25's, I'm just crying over spilt milk because i passed on a cheap pair of A40s i think.

Just wondering if the extra 3db of efficiantcy the A 40s give is due to the driver itself or the x overs or the tweeter ?

Is there a way to make the A25s more efficiant by modding the xovers and is it worth it?

Do the A40s sound better then the A25s?

Where the A40 xl's made in the XL period or the A 25 period ?

thanks so much for any information on this.

i just moved and my room sucks for sound now anyway, I shoudlent even care ! I must just be crazy :) maybe i should just put my B&Ws back up ..... scary stuff ! ... thanks again ... criag

Replacing the caps doesn't affect the efficiency, they use different drivers, they are more efficient drivers.

Like the Dynaco A-25XL, more efficient drivers were used, not the original drivers.

Intresting, So just the dynaco XL series used more efficiant drivers ?

Have you heard the XL series ? If so did you like them ?

I have a pair of A-35s and they sound great, like A-25s but with a bit more bass impact. I have never heard any of the XLs but have heard mixed reviews. Some say they're cleaner and clearer (as well as 3 db more efficient); others say they lack the original A-25 and A-35's smoothness. I'm not sure about the A-40XL's driver placement. I thought it was similar to the A-35's. You can tell them apart by the tweeters. A-35s have the same tweeters as the original A-25s. The A-40XLs are similar to the A-25XL's. There may also be very slight differences in the sizes of the cabinets (A-40 v. A-35). Check Greg Dunn's website. Just Google Dynaco A-25 Greg Dunn and check the chart that lists cabinet size, etc. Hope this helps!

intresting i think i passed on a cheap pair of A 35s if they look like the A25s but the tweeter being higher up...... At the time my logic was the driver is bigger on the A35 so it must be slower.... I later found out the driver is not bigger and my logic was flawed ..... Of course now i wish i had not passed on them..... I think they were 35 bucks, same resale shop i bought the A25s with covers still on them for 12 bucks..... What gets me the most is they might have a big pair of sound design carboard speakers and they want 60 bucks for thoose.... oh well live and learn.... would be intresting to hear a pair of A35s on my system.... keep in mind im not positive the driver is not bigger on the A35 or that it makes a difference ;)

The A-25 and A-35 use EXACTLY the same drivers, but the enclosure is different. The sound is slightly different, but not too much so. I'm listening to a mixed pair as I write (an A-35 on the left and an A-25 on the right--I'm doing a bit of cabinet work on their siblings) and the sound is just fine. They're that close.

Hi there;

I cry when I read about some of the deals members come across.

A friend on mine, yes I have a friend, says the A-35 is a little better speaker than the A-25.

He's been trying to get mine for a few years now.

See Greg Dunn's site about Dynaco speaker literature.

We don't have a Dynaco library here, yet.

They comment about each of the classic speaker models.

More deals are just around the corner still for you.

James, seems to have success with deals, also a very understanding wife, which really helps.

The A-10, 25, 35, and 50 used the same 8 ohm tweeter, either Scan in the beginning, or Seas, later and the more common.

The A-10 used a smaller woofer with the larger 10" magnet assembly, a hot seller on ebay today.

The A-25, and 35 used the same 8 ohm Seas or Scan woofers, but the A-50 used a 16 ohm version of the Scan or Seas woofer.

I have each of them in my hifi museum, except only 1/2 of a Dynaco A-10 which was given to me.

I haven't heard any of the later XL's.

I had a pair of A-40xl's and loved them.Their an inch wider than the A-35.They used the A-25xl tweeter SeasH-86 tweeter for more extended highs than the A-25 and A-35 (H-87)tweeter.I once remember I had them hooked up to a pair of Dyna Mark 3's and a church organ was playing and I got a sub-woofer clean bass sound that I'll never forget.Mark Korda.

There's a pair of A-40XLs playing now, right next to me. They're the most satisfying Dynaco speakers I've ever heard. I bought 4 of them (new) for $47 each, in, I think, 1977. Probably the best $200 I've ever spent on audio equipment. They really do sound like an A-25XL in an A-35 box.
