Advent Cabinets

I'm not an authority, but my hunch is Advents were all made from MDF or particle board (or that kind of material) with a walnut veneer applied to the real walnut versions. Solid walnut would have been impossible at the Advent's price and perhaps not as good a material as MDF from the standpoint of cabinet resonance.

AR used plywood as the base material. It might have been birch, but again, I'm not sure.

My earliest Advents have the masonite ring woofer so they are the original generation, and they are the 'Utility' cabinet of dense particle board covered with a vinyl veneer.

Hi there;

I am not an expert, first.

The original Larger Advent came in a plain 3/4" particle box with vinyl wrapping.

It also was available with walnut veneer, as an aditional expense option, with the solid walnut picture frame fronts.

There was radiused frames and squared frames.

I believes AR used 3/4" plywood for their original AR-1's.

I am not sure as to the grade of plywood.

KLH used multi-ply 3/4" plywood (15 layers I believe, marine grade).

Vern,

Do you know a best way to clean the Particle Board Large Advents ? I use to put Pledge on these years ago and the wax build up is severe and rather sticky. Is there anything that you know of that could strip the wax build up ? Thanks in advance !

Hi Dino;

If you mean vinyl walnut finished cabinets, rather that real Walnut veneer.

I would use a de-waxer to remove the Pledge film first, and use an auto vinyl polish available from an auto supply store.

I would suggest doing all of this outdoors also.

Be cautious that you do not get this on the grill cloths or drivers.

Wait a few weeks, to see what other suggestions, other members may have for you.

If you actually have the real Walnut veneer, please tell us, and more advice will follow.

>are you talking about something like Armorall ?

Hi again;

I have never heard of anyone ever polishing their vinyl speakers before this.

If Armorall is a vinyl polish it certainly is a popular brand.

A quick question at an auto supply dealer, or maybe on the label or Armorall may have a website even.

In the beginning Advent mand two versions of the same speaker. The vinil version and the real wood veneer "utility cabnit" version. It is solin oak veneer.

Hi there;

Advent, Larger versions, were vinyl Walnut finish (utility), and several variations of the Walnut veneer cabinets. As always, there may have been other variables, that never saw a lot of production.
