Guest TT100
Hi. First post here. In '78 I bought my parents a pair of the large Advent walnut speakers. They have the rounded front corners.Recently I retrieved them as mom wanted a small bookshelf system. The tweeters are fine but the surrounds on the woofers are shot. I've never had speakers repaired and don't know if just the foam surround can be replaced or must the speakers be reconed.I've seen repair kits on ebay occasionally and thought I'd give it a shot myself as I'm pretty good with this kind of thing.Any suggestions or advice will be greatly appreciated.Thanks,TT100
dynaco_dan
Hi thereA very good question to ask.I also faced the same issue about 10 years ago.My son noticed the surrounds were gone and I, of course thought he wrecked them.I thought of having to go out and buy new woofers first.I asked a few friends and was told about re-foam kits.About $20.00 US included 2 surrounds, ordered for the specific speaker model, enough glue to just do the job, maybe a new pair of dust caps, instruction sheet and maybe shims.I took me about 1 1/2 hour to do the first one, and 10 minutes to do the second. There is, and I can't confirm this, more than one manufacturer of the surrounds. There appears to be a difference between them, someone else will comment on this I am sure.A person with patience and a little skills can do the job.Tools needed, patience, a carton cutter, scraper, screwdriver to remove woofer screws from cabinet, and a 24" Ridgid pipe wrench (just kidding). You certainly can always ask more questions as time goes on with your project.Good luck and please keep us posted with your progress.>Hi. stan461
I have done these Advent woofers myself. It is worth it. Not a hard job but patience is the key.Unless the voice coil is frozen or rubbing or the cone itself is ripped, why recone?
