Guest
I am restoring some of the larger size Advent's from the midseventies. Unfortunately, the previous owner has replaced the original dampening with some fiberglass insulation. I know that the original speakers came with foam squares that measured 2-1/8"x12"x12". There are a total of four squares per speaker. Does anyone knowwhat type of foam this is? It looks like upholestry foam. I have anotherpair that I used as a comparision. I don't want to take these apartagain if I can help it.Sincerely,D.H.
Guest
I have a pair of both the original large Advent and the New Advent large loudspeakers (1977) and both of them have yellow fiberglass insulation inside.
Guest
Thanks for your reply. I have two pairs of Advents also. The pair that I bought on e-Bay definitely does not have the original dampening. These have pink insulation that you woulduse on a house with cheese cloth to protect the woofers.I will probably take apart the pair that have been in my family'spossesion since the mid 70's. I can then take one of the foamsquares to a foam shop in my area and have it matchedI have already repaired the surrounds and rebuilt the crossovers.I would like to have the original style dampening in the speakersbecause I believe if you change the way something is madeyou change the way it sounds.Sincerely,D.H. I don't know as much about Advents as AR's, but I think that the fiberglass glass wool was probably the original stuff, particularly since it has the cheesecloth to keep the wool out of the woofer cone. Perhaps Advent did use foam blocks at some point, but fiberglass was very common in all these vintage speakers simply because it worked so well. Also, a specific amount of fiberglass determines the speaker damping, or "Q" to some degree, so the correct amount should always be used. If you don't know, you can try to find a "stock" unit somewhere that hasn't been modified or changed, and then pull out the fiberglass (or foam) in that speaker and measure and weigh it, or at least duplicate the same amount.--Tom Tyson

You're probably right regarding the New Large Advent; the first The Advent Loudspeaker I think used fiberglass material for the box damping. Guest russwollman
OK, I have the final answer. My Advent 5012/Ws have yellow fiberglass, but my Advent A4s have foam squares. They used whatever they had in the closet. And, confound it, respectfully speaking, of course, it's DAMPING, not dampening, because if it were dampening, your speakers would be all wet inside, and no one likes that watery sound, maybe except fish, but I never knew any fish who had really good systems. They buy all their stuff from Radio Shark, and we all know what happens there...
ToastedAlmond
A sturgeon usually makes enough $ to get a nice system. I think I've seen some operating at Radio Shark myself. This is going to get bad before it gets good. George
