Brochures, flyers, reviews

Recommended Posts

In the process of moving I found hundreds of old brochures and flyers of vintage HI FI equipment. eg:

Introducing the AR9

The AR Verticals

The NewAR90

2 Truth in Listening highlighting the 10pi,11,12,14,15,17,18 series

An original LST owners manual..??? I never owned a set before???

Acoustic Research International Catalogue with the 3,3a etc...

AR High Fidelity Components from same era as preceding

2 Acoustic Research International Hi Fidelity Components.. similar to above but a vertical brochure where the former is horizontal

AR Reprints of Hi Fidelity and Stereo Review reorts on the AR3a,AR amplifier,XA turntable,LST

AR Shipping information brochure

Canadian price lists

AR6 flyer

Lots of Dynaco stuff

Advent flyers

ERI Speakers catalogue

Wharfedale speakers flyer

Jensen Speakers brochure

Bozak brochures and much much more

I will be happy scan copies of any of the above as time permits for those that need or for the library but I don't have time to check out what is already there so I will do on a request basis.

I'd be happy to do the "sorting" and comparing what you've got to what's already in the library, the difficulty being that I'd have to see what you have, first.

You could put it all in the "Library Additions and Corrections" area and I could try to help Mark sort it from there, somehow.

Hi there Wally

Very kind of you to do this, rather than just throwing them out.

A personnal thank you, from me.

OK I'll get started as soon as I get the scanner set up. This will be a long process because I have so much material. Have to figure out optimal scan dpi so files are not too big but good quality.

Any suggestions, how about optimal scan rate for PDF files....?

Good morning.

I would suggest, depending on your scanner's dpi, hopefully 1200 or greater is to scan at the highest resolution each picture and zip that scan.

Each file will be large, only one or two files at a time can be emailed and saved on line, at least the end librarian can take the image and leave it at high resolution or ?

If you scan at 300 dpi or thereabouts by the time it arrives at the site it may not be printable or saveable to preserve.

I have 15 meg of storage, I believe, you may also send some to me for me, to forward to Bret, at a more convenient time.

Maybe someone else has a better suggestion?

If I can be of help, please let me know.

When I have a good day, I will try to dig up my folders as well, for the library.

Thank you very much Wally and Bret for this very positive activity.

Vern

ps. I always think of something else, afterwards.

Do the 1200 dpi plus scan, burn the files jpg or zip to cd-r's or dvd's, mail them, keeping a backup copy of each.

I would be willing to help with some of this cost, if needed.

This would assure archival copies of the highest form.

What do you think?

This seems to be a real problem. Currently my "best" scans have been jpg files into Photoshop, then I use the "Save for Web" function in ImageReady. It seems to reduce the color-depth first while making minimum visible changes to the image. I can usually get the image to 1/10th the original size (or smaller) and lose very, very little.

But then I use Adobe's PDF Writer and all bets are off. Either the page comes out huge (file size) or it gets fuzzy. I've got a sneaking suspicion that I just don't know how to use Acrobat to its fullest.

If I get the PDF crystal clear, then the file size is enormous. If I find a good solution, I'll let you know.

Or you could send me the hardcopy of all of this and I could do what I can do. (I'm about to invest in a new copy of Acrobat, I'm currently using 5. Maybe it got better or has a good twain driver.)

On the other hand, maybe I should spend the money on Paperport 10, or some version of Word, I think, will let you save to PDF. I haven't tried importing a JPG into Word and saving as PDF.

Hi Wally!

Thank you for the offer, and thanks to Bret for offering to sort out which items in your collection we don't already have in the library. Any scans you create in high resolution are likely to be very large. I can give you a FTP account on my server if you are familiar with FTP, or perhaps you could send the originals to Bret or I for scanning?

Thanks,

Mark

This is probably the easiest option for me. I will send all of the literature to Bret for copying for the library. Bret can return these to me when he/you are done.

Do you want me to send everything I have on speakers? ie all brands?

Will still be a week or more before I get it all together and mail it out.

I've started going through my stuff and I've found a lot. Because of the volume I will restrict it to American speakers only.

Some of this stuff was stored in boxes in my shed so it smells a bit mouldy. Any way to get rid of that?

Museums must deal with that problem all the time....

Bret, Vern

My apologies. I just haven't got to this task for various reasons including procrastination.

Vern, I noticed in some emails that you are from Canada, yes?

Please reply to me privately, copy Bret, and let me know whereabouts you are. In retrospect it will be cheaper to send the literature to you rather than deal with customs etc by sending to Bret.

If you're in the GTA that is great cuz I'm just east of there.

Again, my apologies and I will send the stuff as originally promised but would like to keep expense and hassle to a minimum.

regards, Wally

Hi Vern, Bret

The 1st package is finally ready. Sorry it took so long...

I am forwarding in tomorrow's mail about 5 lbs of speaker literature.

Please return it when you are done scanning and if you don't mind, I would like a copy of the cd you burn.

Sorry but this batch is musty smelling because it was in a box in a shed for too long.

I'll send you the 2nd batch when you're finished with the first.

regards, Wally

ps: Vern I could not email you directly the last couple of times because your server said you were over limit or something like that.

Hi Wally;

I just got home to hear your answering machine message you had left for me, thank you.

My friends send me too many jokes and I only have about 15 meg capacity, even though I turn it on daily.

Great going Wally, I'll keep a good lookout for the parcel.

I'll sort through everything first and I'll let you know what I found.

When I return them to you I'll include some desicant in the packaging.

I'll be happy to burn you a copy of whatever I find of value, also a copy for Mark for the library.

I'll be scanning at the highest quality that I can.

You had mentioned some of the literature may be not relevant to this site, but there may be additions to the companies represented at a future date.

Thank you very much for all of your efforts, Wally.

It is members such as yourself, who add to collective good of the hobby.

Have a great night.

Thank you, Wally.

I'll definitely keep my eyes open for the parcel.

As I mentioned earlier, I'll peruse the literature and make a list of the contents.

I'll use a database file to list all of the literature you sent me as to manufacturer, model and a brief description.

I can email out this file to you and Mark later.

I'll scan the more relevant material first, and burn you, Mark and I a copy of the cd's.

Each scan will be of the highest quality I can, so that they can be reduced if Mark wants to, for the library.

I wish I had a DVD burner as they have a far greater capacity, but we'll make do for now.

I buy cd's by the hundred, so I won't be running out too soon.

Thank you again, Wally for your thoughtfullness in providing this literature for our use.

Hi Wally;

I've tried through both options on this site to email you.

I did receive the package the following Monday.

I have tendonitis now from un-packing it. lol

You must like wrapping Christmas presents too.

I want to send you direct via email a small file of my progess.

Will you please email me a usuable email address, thank you.

Hi Vern,

I hope it's going well. I could not reply to your email address and forgot to reply here.

You can send to musician7w@yahoo.com or wallys@sympatico.ca.

I have a stack at least as large here of other speaker stuff. JBL, Altec, .....etc.

regards, Wally

I've been able to eliminate all musty smells in my 400 sf basement by keeping 2 small bowls of vinegar in the room.

I think it's the paper and cardboard that cause the problem by absorbing moisture=musty smell!

I've also enclosed specific musty smelling items in a large tupperware container with a small stable container of vinegar. That has worked for me everytime -- so far. WARNING: put it somewhere when it won't get bumped, spilling vinegar on the items!
