It is actually not all that unusual to find this.

The drivers were nearly glued in with putty in those days, so performance was not likely to have been affected, and the grille frames were hot glued in place, so nobody would likely see it. Pulling the woofer with all that gooey putty under it probably wasn't going to happen if the cabinet was sealed properly. The only other eyes on them would have been in a service center, given AR's very generous warranty. I'm sure AR never expected it to be a topic of conversation a half century later through something called the "internet."

When reinstalling the T-nut dab some epoxy around the outside of it, tap it in, and tighten a screw through it while it dries. The T-nut hole itself is sometimes stripped, so the glue can be very helpful. When reinstalling the woofers don't use too much downward pressure when starting the screws, as it can dislodge the T-nuts. It is likely how it occurred most often in the factory. It sucks when it happens after most of the screws are already installed.

I've been servicing AR, as well as many other speaker brands, for over 40 years, and have found some very interesting things along the way. Many years ago I spoke to a former AR factory tech (amplifier section) who recounted the story of a speaker returned due to an unpleasant odor, especially when it was driven at higher volumes. When it was opened to investigate, they found the remnants of a sandwich in it! :)

Btw, KLH woofer screws are much worse. The cabinets don't have T-nuts, just lots of stripped screw holes in flaky particle board cabinets.

I second that, I have more issues with trying to get klh woofers, especially the sets of sixes and fours I've found that first got the screwed in woofers!  Pita!

Roy's epoxy suggestion should became a law for all!

    Not to discourage anyone but.

    About $150 for used woofers.

About the the same for tweeters and another $50. plus for X-over and pots,  etc.

Then, refinishing, leaving one too consider waiting till a more complete pair are available.

Only if one was hopeful and inclined to do all the work and such, only then would it be possible to enjoy these.

Or, this may end up only as fodder for forum members to comment about.

Yet, the thought remains, has this forum ever turned down a possible restoration on these pages?  I think not.

    FM

P.S. Has it ever stopped me from stockpiling woofers and tweeters? No, of course not and is due to my affection of AR's sound-quality for so many years, 52 years to be exact but, that's just me.  However, AR-2ax's were very popular and decent pairs are still out there for possible purchase. So, have at it but consider some costs involved from the start either way-you decide.

    I second everything Frank said!

I still have new pots available.

Among our recent conversations John, im glad to hear that.  Answer your backlog because of my year in purgatory I guess you could say also known as long covid just let us go if it slash uncovered again..... 2021, I  refurbished 21 sets of 8" 2 ways and up roughly, mostly big three ways.  In the last 15 months..…I refurbished and sold two sets..total.  in the 2 months before I got sick.

In inventory currently, eating holes in my pockets every hour, i have..id say   three dozen fully assembled sets of  speakers between AR, Allison, KLH,  epi, Advents, and a few sets of ensemble 1's, 4 sets of the oak "ambiences,". !!! And the two the two, the only known for a fact speakers I know Henry worked on design-wise at Cambridge.

However, if anyone knows exactly what's that's beyond those I mentioned Henry actually had a  hand in designing with Cambridge,  you'd be saving a vet. a lot of stress. Yes I'm laughing.   But if anybody does know that he definitely designed anything else it would ease my worried mind.   But damn those all oak Ambience's are  gorgeous, and very hard to locate.

And I say all of that to simply make the point that if I don't hold the record for the most pots purchased from you , (John), in the last two years I'd be pretty shocked... But, I just dm'ed you.  If you catch what I'm throwing out! Haha.

Have I had success in cleaning and restoring the original pots?  on occasion, yes.   But the precariousness of those cleaned and restored pots when my business is in the fourth quarter and down a whole lot of points, die to Covid and it's nasty forms..., aka, if I can't pull a 4th quarter miracle and get a ton of speakers refurbished to my standards and sold very soon, I'm done... so new pots it is.  Never mind, I guess you could say initially, I was very stupid to give a 7 day money back guarantee no matter what and 60 day "whatever goes wrong I'll fix it gratis"  including shipping the sets back to me and them.  That calculated risk 12 years ago actually paid off.  And rebuild pots in those numbers.... would have been a  problem. Still makes one question the sanity of a guy who offerd any sort of warranty to 70 year old electronics?

I do, and it's paid off in spades.  I thank my grandfather's instilled work ethic, the tools and workshop he left me way past, but most of all his infuriating at the time refusal to do anything but the "right" way.   Thanks gramps!  And thanks John, for being my 15 ohm pot guardian angel!

Looking for mids for AR302 myself. Thanks for the responses thus far

I guess I'm the appointed Ken Kantor 303 series fanboy.

The best replacement tweeters for your set of 302's ( I own a black vinyl, a rosewood, and just yesterday my set of 302t's arrived...yes they o as low as the 303 as the specs indicated!). Ken has stated he has a set of 302's in his main room apparently over the 303.

I loaded up on these tweets years ago.  With the custom 3d printed adapter plates I had made...the 303 series tweets blend well with any AR dome mid 3 way from the 10pi forward.  They'll be a day real soon there will be no more original parts for any of those speakers so maybe I guess it's my retirement fund, but I got as many as you need perfectly non dented or lumpy either the shielded kind that come in the 218V, 228 or the non shielded, that come in your 302's.  If you'd like, I can refresh the ferrofluid for a minimum fee.

Yes, many sets of perfect mids as well, dm me!

    208v.....0!!!!

    218v.....10 sets

    228......1 set

    338.....3 sets

    302....2 sets

303.....2 sets ( one custom set in a       3a cab.  My favorite set.

    205vc....3....great center

The powered sub with a 303 woofer I can't recall the model #....1 set.

I feel the AR 10pi, is a very under-appreciated speaker. Dependent on condition, I would easily give up a set of my AR-3a's for a set of AR-10pi.

The use of the transformer the way AR did in the AR-LST and AR-10pi was something I felt was a good thing and I wonder why it was not used to a larger extent.

I just had a change of mood, I'm going to look for a pair of good condition AR-10pi and retain all of the sets of AR-3a's.

I also have wondered why the transformer that was used in such an ingenious way in the 10π and LSt was never used again in the industry that I know of...same as many many of the other wonderful Innovations AR made.

I have a set of 10π's.  9.5/10.  Early version.  Foam grilles still 7/10.  All drivers original to set.  Email if you're interested.

  6.  Good morning actually have three... one in the fake cherry and two in black vinyl.

I might be the biggest fan of the 303 Series on the forum but could be mistaken.

I can't say that I actually need three...it's such a great speaker, however.  Turned on itscebd, a pair make a terrific mtm set.

I prefer a fair trade to selling.  But p.m. either way.  Thanks.

  7. Shipping is not a concern.  No there is no condition requirements.  Solid and without traumatic holes I guess everything else will work for me for the most part these are all going to be revenued so as long as there's not any super massive you know trauma which means you don't have to be super careful with white gloves and packaging them and of course I would composite you in the sale price for your time to package and ship now I'll gladly pay you half immediately on whatever we negotiate on and if it takes you to 2 weeks, 6 weeks+ to ship...I'm patient.  The balance a payment will be paid whenever you ship them out and include a tracking number.   Living in Detroit area so it'd be nice if it was closer to me but again I'll take what I can get.

Beat the hell up cabinets are fine even preferred for cost sakes they're all going to be revenued so that's I'm good with just about any condition if you got any other classic era beat up or not up cabinets like that please let me know same goes for ar5 or 4X (6, 7?) looking for cabinets for all thank you very much

  8. My favorite 10-in classic AR well I'm going to have to be a non originalist here and say that it's an ar5 with an original 10 in Alico magnet woofer.

Now this is using alnico 10-in woofers that RoyC himself rebuilt...so take that with you to Ponder...

    My ar5's

-1) straight up not all set, rebuilt fully, with Midwest tweets for now.

    - 2) rebuilt fully with alnico woofers and rebuilt tweets ( we know who).

-3) ar-302 drivers, xo...but modified to use oem pots for mid tweet attuatuation.  Which all proof strictly considering the 302 is the 4 ohm speaker and the five is in eight ohm.

Got to say my favorite is the 5/302 hybrid, sorry long timers.

I brought the baffle out flush w the front of the speaker just like 302 to avoid diffraction issues that the 302 never had,( that by default the ar-5 did( oops) so it's a bit different looking although I was able to work it so that w/grills installed ( days and days of brainstorming to figure out how to do) still made it look like an AR-5 unless you were really up close.

( I did the same with a 3a/303). Love them, hand built full point to point xo's on those two hybrids.  I'm telling you from that day forward I'll never prefer circuit board versus the point-to-point crossover ever the 303 inside of a 3A cabinet with the point-to-point crossover sounds more than a little bit better than a typical 303 and I didn't go Hog Wild.  I reused AR coils from all kinds of crossovers, adjusting the values very unwinding the appropriate amount of cover to match the value I'm looking for....ar did use the best inductors) when I could electrolytics except for on the mid and tweeters in which I used film caps with slight attenuation...( forgive me Mr. Cantor, if I'd only known about your stance on using electrolytics when originally designed for such.... if I only knew...just kidding)

***( since reading Ken's views on the subject and previous threads recently however I think that going forward I'm going to try to start using electrolytics when original and bypass them with these cheaper Pio caps I've been finding out of Russia or just bypass with  film or hell I just take Kens advice because who the hell am I to take umbrage with him?  and just you straight up with your legs all the way it's hard to argue with the fact that the  303 with relatively new electric caps sounded like well the best loudspeakers I've heard maybe ever up to that point and maybe have ever even since that point maybe.  In my mind the very best but at least arguably the best speaker designer Living in America today and sorry no Fanboy here,  simply the truth based on sheer numbers and accomplishments )

  9. 1) "early" 2ax introduced 64-70.  Used the ar-2 line of 10" alnico magnet as well as cloth surrounds. In my opinion, if you get some output from the tweets ( shared w ar-3 ( and 4 ohm in both, later 2ax is 8).

There's a little more in between fluctuations that could be discussed but for sake of argument generally speaking...

    2) 1968...ar-5 introduced.  Not high selling.  It used the new 10" foam surround woofer, never actually using the cloth surround alnico 10-in that was used in the 2ax.

    3) The ar-2ax, switched to the same 10" foam surround ferrite magnet woofer, the same that had been in use in the ar-5 for 2 years then.  I suspect AR was feeling the air if I wasn't going to last much longer although it did up until 76'

The  2ax was far more popular vs the ar-5.  So for whatever reason they also switched the "late" 2ax model and included the ar-5's 10" foam surround woofer eith the flat dust cap. Very hard to miss.

In 1970, the late 2ax and the ar-5  shared the same cabinet in terms of dimensions 24x13.5x11.5.

the ar5 low end spec of 38 HZ.   Meanwhile the "late" AR 2ax with the same woofer specs at 42hz.

---  How could this be?  same trunk size, same woofer ?   well the crossover of the late 2ax woofer was 1..4 khz...thats really high, but, I'm only a laymen.  I do believe that was the responsibility for the lower frequency response however I think most would agree.

As for your question regarding to LST and its woofer, yes it did use the ar5 also known as the late AR 2ax woofer  but keep in mind the previous response to this question stated that and it's accurate the alnico woofer is about 75"  than the foam surround.  Would anybody really consider replacing a baffle of a very very pricey lst2?!?they're worth a bunch...I don't know I take a lot of risks but I wouldn't take that one.

If you made a new baffle there would be space, but as they say just because you can do something doesn't mean you should.

I'd also suspect because the LST2 is based on the ar5 platform which I assume includes the crossover and crossover frequencies, at this point you're just getting so far away. the idea of attempting that seems a bit foolhardy at best maybe a bit dumb at worse but that's not to say I've never done dumb so I.

Also remember the lst2 incorporates a Transformer that if I'm not mistaken based on the AR-10 Pi utilize the woofer almost exclusively that's going to play a big role in deciding to slip swap out woofers.

I think my biggest concern would be power handling generally speaking.  I believe that foam surround woofers were created in order to handle more power,  not specifically the phone making a difference but the overall design of the woofer in general and using the new foam surrounds on the market or maybe it is the phone I can't answer that one.

I don't know that the above statement as sure fact however probably a lot of people would it be somewhat agree I would think at least enough to question against it the power demands of the lst2 would be much higher than an ar5 or 2ax.  That could be, I think surely would be very problematic.

    John,

I have only seen (deteriorated) foam surrounds on original AR-12 mids. If the surrounds were made of cloth there would be need to replace them. Your source for new foam would be of interest. The repaired AR-12 mids I've been seeing on Ebay these days have new foam surrounds which have been cut and pieced together to fit.

Very interested your source for mid foam..5 year's layer, haha.

I restored a pair of AR2ax's and seem to have a buzzy mid, and seems to occur in specific freqs, mostly on some vocals. I'm trying to find how to test, investigate and identify the problem.

Any methods out there? Anything like audio tracks on CD?

Installed are HiViQ1r tweeters (RoyC mod), OEM pots in really nice condition, new caps, etc.

EDIT: I DO have a BK Precision function generator.

I have a half dozenorire sets of at, 2ax mids.  As with over epoxied large advent woofers, the same in all pre 9 series mids, and any other unpleasing external dampening ugliness

....i removed the grills, replace with very white insulation( same exact, same amount used). With clear epoxy, increasing the aesthetic of their signidivicantky.   I have so many,(all specs, is be happy to give you set for shipping.  Not much resale anyhow.   Truly I ha e a ton, glad so some could use.
