  1. Ohh, I will check that stuff out for sure.  Always looking for a wood filler that takes color.

JKent, there is a set of old Eico speakers available here locally for $40 that remind me of these and I have been tempted to go check them out.

I want a model 8.  Keeping my eyes peeled.

  2. On a couple pots I have, after trying to clean them up it seemed the wiper would fall into a hole at the end (what it felt like) - almost give and click into the end.  Even took a littlw more force to get it going back the other direction.

I have kinda given up on old pots unless they are in really good shape. I try to determine in my mind if I was Roy A, or EV or HK if I was restoring of these, what would I do if I went over to my old parts bin and there were no originally specified pots left from the old days to use.  I'm not sure if the LPad would be their first choice, But i doubt they would worry to much about it not being the exact original.

  3. I pulled the trigger on a 2nd GFA 5500 last night.  $326 + shipping in original box.

My options for now will be the Adcom GFP 565 pre, which has multiple outs that can be used for bi amp purposes.

Also have the Xiang Sheng tube pre.

I've been happy with the lone 5500 up to this point on the various high demand speakers in my collection so I figured what the heck, keep going in that direction until I can afford an upgrade that is worthy of the $.  I will likely dial in the preamp first though and would like to go with a tube pre.  For now, the chinese tube pre is fairly impressive, especially for the money invested. (no phono though)

I guess I need to think thru my cabling now while the amp is on it's way.

  4. So, those of you that have the 9's do you bi amp them?  If so how do you have yours set up?  Vertical passive?  Horizontal passive?

    What gear have you used?

In my case I have the Adcom GFA 5500 and am thinking about getting another.  I have a few different preamps to choose from including the Adcom GFP 565, Xiang Sheng tube, and my recently purchased Citation 1.

    Let's hear your success stories.

  5. I think they looked for the best buys. Rumor has it HK used to buy surplus parts on Canal Street in NYC. If they could save a few cents on caps they did. Makes it confusing for us though.

Probably no different than today's computer parts supply chain. Ever changing as suppliers come up with a deal for the manufacturers.

  6. Excellent! Worthy of your attention. ha! I too put aside my 2ax's a while ago for something else that came along and have not gotten back to them yet (wasn't looking forward to dealing with those damn pots).

Appears the velcro is coming off the grille so be careful with that, but I am sure you realize it. Plenty of strategies for getting those edges tamed I am sure. At least there aren't any water rings. Damn water rings.

Start a new thread. This KLH forum needs more action!

  7. Geoff, you are going to love them. Good price too.

    Those serial numbers sound low.

While most KLH do well with most levels of amperage, the Fives do thrive with more. Not as needy as the AR3 but close. At least that is what I found. Mine are in the master bedroom hooked up to a Pioneer SX737 receiver so decent power but not big. I recently hooked them up to my main system and was quickly reminded what these can do.

  8. Love this thread so I am pulling it back up.

Does anybody have the Model 28? I would love a pair of them. I actually have the tulip stands for them already and have been watching for some to come along on EBay but to no avail.

Currently my KLH collection consists of 5, 17, 23, 32 and the Model 27 receiver. The Model Fives are of course wonderful. The 17's are hooked up to teh Twenty Seven and that combo is very rich and warm.
