I have several 12" woofers that are marked with the AR logo but also have a part # 1210003-2A. What are these and are the suitable for replaceing the AR3a and AR9 woofers? Dale

Dale,

This is the Tonegen service-replacement woofer for the AR-3a, AR-11, AR-10Pi, AR-9, LST... and so forth. If it has the flat-side frame, which I could not positively verify in your picture, it is the one. It is for all intents and purposes identical to the early woofers, and can be used in any of the AR speakers specified for the 2000003-0 or 12100003-0 woofer. The Tonegen woofer came out sometime in the early to mid-1990s, and was used to replace the original woofer, and it works fine for all the AR 12-inch speakers with the flat-side speaker hole.

Dale,

That's definitely the one, and certainly "good-to-go" on the AR-3a. By the way, are those a couple of AR-3a crossovers on the floor (in the picture)?

I had some original early concerns about the relative stiffness of the suspension on these Tonegen woofers, at least compared to the earlier original AR woofers. I think, however, that it makes very little difference except perhaps full-excursion harmonic distortion, and the old woofer *may* or *may not* be superior (Ken to tell). For all practical purposes, there is probably no audible difference in performance. Incidentally, Ken has one of these Tonegens (like the one in your picture) to test, and as soon as I can get some original AR-12Ws out to him, he'll be able to compare some more AR woofers, time permitting.

The Tonegen woofers are obviously less "hand-made" than the original AR woofers, and the manufacturing quality is obviously very high.

Tom, Thanks. The xovers are from some 4x's but I have some 3a's which are removed from the cabinets. Dale
