Serial Numbers

Is there any way I can tell the date of manufacture by the serial number? I have a pair of AR-2 loudspeakers. I looked on the inside of the cabinent and there is no date stamped on it. The woofers are the cast frame type with the big alnico magnets, in fact they look just like the original AR-3 woofers, except a bit smaller. The serial number on the back of the cabinet is: B 61266 and the other speakers serial number is: B 59704.

Most likely your AR-2's were manufactured somewhere around 1960 or 1961. AR stopped making the AR-2 in 1964, at which time the AR-2x was introduced to replace it. However, somewhere on the drivers should be a rubber-stamped driver-build date, but these dates are sometimes difficult to find as the ink fades through the years. For sure, however, your AR-2's were made somewhere between 1957 and 1964.
