Hi John;

Have you checked out ebay?

I have seen some nice looking ones and hopefully cared for and not abused listed and going for under $100.00 a pair.

The water glass veneer stains and smoked grill cloths has taken it's toll over all these years.

Unfortunately, I've seen more abused looking ones than not, but, with a little TLC, marks and scratches can be cleaned up.

Good luck and please keep us up to date with your choices.

The AR-4X's are a very personnal favourite of mine, at a very reasonable price.

Hi John;

Are you a collector?

I did pick up a pair recently and when they arrived I thought, wow, has the veneer ever deteriorated.

Works out that these are pine cabinets that were stained.

No problem, I have a small supply of matched walnut veneer sheets.

When I see the almost visually perfect speaker sytem on ebay the bidding usually goes accordingly high.

I have seen several visual variations of woofers but never noticed any difference in tweeters for the 4X's.

This is with the earlier cloth surrounds.

Are you working towards stacking them?

Would be interesting to read your impression of this.

If the 4X's have minor cabinet deterioration I can't hear it.

The AR-4X's are, in my opinion, the "best bang for the buck", of all of the speakers I have heard.

In the new year, I would like to try a little experiment with only capacitor changes, with the AR-4X's and like priced classic 2 way model speakers of different brands.

If I hear a substantial improvement I will write it up.

Good luck.

Hi John;

I don't remember what the 20uf cap was for.

I don't think that is the tweeter cap.

I'm scratching my head but maybe about 5 - 8uf cap?

Please let us know your results, John.

>pairs say 20 uf regards john

Thank you.

I stand corrected.

My memory isn't what it used to be.

I think that maybe I was scratching my head too hard.

Then it is the Dynaco A-25 that is 5 uf.

Strange that they would both be 8 ohms and be so far apart in capacitance.

Live and learn and keep notes.
