Loudspeaker woofer/tweeter install

Greetings fellow Adventists (?). I'd like to install woofers/ tweeters in some old (walnut) Advent Loudspeakers. The old tweeters are still there, but the woofers are gone. Can I expect to find original equipment from the various dealers online, or are they modified "improved" versions? Do they really sound better? From whom do you suggest I purchase the replacements parts?

Assuming I can get the parts and assuming I haven't done this before, what tips can you recommend about a proper install?

Thanks to all for your help.

Hi there

Before you do anything else describe the woofer problem.

If it is just the rotten surrounds they can be re-done.

The tweeters are pretty hard to beat for sound quality.

Do solder inline fuse holders in the + speaker lead and use 1 amp fast blow fuses.

If you have access to a digital camera, take a photo and download it to this site.

More advice to follow, I'm sure.

Good luck.

Well, Vern, unfortunately the woofers are gone, as in tossed out. The sad story is I yanked the bad woofers from two of my four speakers (i.e.,"towers") a few years back when I was uninformed (stupid) about replacing rotten surrounds and thinking I would just replace them later. Don't even ask me about tossing my Advent 201 tape deck. Anyway, now it's later and I need to find two good replacement woofers to give me back my TOWER-OF-POWER rush. Do you mean I should keep the original tweeters if they still sound okay or should I replace them while I'm messing around in there? The fuse idea "sounds" like a winner, although I've been kind to my thumpers throughout the many years.

Will the woofer frames require a gasket or some kind of adhesive seal?

Sorry, no digital camera to help. You're talking to a guy who is still listening to 70's Marantz equipment and a Sony turntable. You can try imaging looking at the cabinets with big holes where the woofers use to be, tweeters intact and some (wool?) insulation batting inside. Get the picture?

Okay, I'll stay tuned for more good advice from my fellow Adventurers.

Good day,

Good morning.

Definitely keep the existing tweeters if they are working.

As to regards to the woofers I would suggest looking at eBay for used ones even if they need to be re-foamed.

They may have been re-foamed 10 years ago but you can anticipate re-foaming in the very near future regardless.

If they were just refoamed anticipate 10 - 15 year life span of the foam alone.

I would expect that they will cost maybe $25.00 each +/-.

Your eBay cost is determined on the day, week, month, whether it's raining or snowing and whether you're wearing tennis shoes or dress shoes.

Seriously, in other words watch a few auctions before bidding to see where the bidding goes.

One auction may lead to a pair for $10.00 and the next may be $70.00.

Luck of the draw sometimes.

Swapmeets can sometimes be fruitful or 2nd hand stores at times and the most common yard sales.

Buying new woofer substitutes would be the last on my list of to do's.

Use electrical putty available from the electrical departments at Home Depot, etc.

Put a bead around the perimeter of the drivers about the size of a pencil.

Hope this helps somewhat.

Good luck again.

Hey Dan, thanks for the 100w input. I checked ebay and they do have a couple pair there now for around $20 (plus shipping), but I'd need to replace the surrounds. No big deal, I guess. How can I tell the difference between the 1st generation woofer and the later editions? Ebay also has the original woofers for $129, but what's considered original? Do I sound suspicious?

Hi again.

If I am correct, the original Larger Advent woofers were with the inverted or reverse to everyone elses roll surround. There is also a hardboard ring extension between the surround and the steel frame.

The later version had no hardboard filler piece between the cone and the frame.

The re-foam kits (2 surrounds, glue, instructions and maybe shims)are readily available at around $15 - $20.00 +/- per pair.

The "new original" you mention are approximately a physical and maybe a close sonic replacement of todays manufacturer.

They may or may not match the original woofers sonically.

To be "new original" they would have had to made to the same specs and materials, as the originals.

Only the source knows for sure.

It would be nice if a warehouse full of "new old stock" oem woofers were to turn up in the future.

Look under "vintage speakers" as well on eBay.

Good luck again.
