AR-LST restoration and brokrn switch

Recommended Posts

I have posted several notes regarding my trials and tribulations with my LST's.

I am currently eagerly awaiting a pair of AR3a woofers to replace the Tonegens that I currently have in them. Since I'm doing that I would like to get the 6 way switches working. One is ok but the second is broken. Please contact me if you have a working switch that you are willing to sell. When I do the switch I will also replace the caps except the 1200ufd compulytic as per Pete B's recommendations which make imminent sense.

What I don't understand is that the 'flat' or #2 switch position has the woofer connected to the -3db tap on the aoutoformer. In this position I find the bass somewhat weak compared to the #5 positiion which is supposed to emulate the AR3a in the 'normal' pot settings. The LST manual says #6 position is also similar to the AR3A in 'normal' position yet there is a 1 and 2 db difference between the mids and highs on 5 and 6 positions... is this due to inaccuracy of the pots on the AR3a?

In any case I have my LST's set on the 5 position which is most satisfying to me with the current Tonegen woofers.

I'd like some feedback from LST owners regarding settings of their LST's, where are they mounted and if they have renewed their capacitors.

Hi Wally;

There were at least two different brand switches used in the AR-LST speaker system.

I believe the first was a Mallory brand and the later one was a ? brand.

The #2 position is the flat position or for all intent and purposes, ruler flat.

The output at #2 should be the same perceived sound level for the woofers and the tweeters.

You like heavy bass.

I've set all of mine to the #2 position a decade ago and just leave them alone.

My lower pair are 16" above the floor on a stand my Big Bros made.

I have the tweeters close together.

I've never changed out my caps and I don't plan on it in the near future unless I have a sonic problem with them.
