AR-2a vs. AR-2ax

I recently acquired a pair of AR-2a's in mint condition at a bargin price but have unfortunately I have been so busy that I've had no time to listen to them at length :-( These AR-2a's are the ones with the dual 4" or 5" mids and the older "fried egg" dome tweeter and the cloth-edge 10" woofer.

Now I'm wondering how they would compare to the newer AR-2ax's with the single 3 1/2" cone midrange?

Anyone have any thoughts on how different these speakers sound?

Thanks.

Hi Tim

The last AR-2AX also had the 3/4" dome tweeter in addition to the 3 1/2" cone tweeter with the mesh and fibreglas.

That particular midrange was also the AR-4's tweeter.

The AR-4 received rave reviews until the later tweeter change as well as X designation.

The dispersion would be not as great on both planes with the dual mids. Probably was better laying on its side on a shelf.

There may have been crossover changes as well.

You have an antique, charish it, it is unique.

I would recommend fusing as soon as possible, so as not to damage, the dual drivers at least.

I can't comment on the mids sound, but the cone driver was offered as a field replacement.

I don't have access to my AR data to read any reviews of the day.

You don't have a re-foam headache down the road as well.

Enjoy.

Please let us know of your own review of the speakers when you have time.
